PATROL for Microsoft Exchange Servers monitors the Information Stores, storage groups, databases, and logs in your Exchange environment.

You can monitor the following storage properties:

  • Database file size
  • Streaming file size
  • Outgoing and incoming message queue size
  • Message delivery rates
  • Average delivery time
  • Transaction log number and total size
  • Percentage of fragmentation of the database
  • Free disk space on the drive containing the database

You can perform the following administrative tasks:

  • Mount and dismount a database
  • Verify database integrity
  • Defragment a database

Furthermore, you can configure a recovery action to automatically defragment the database on heavy fragmentation. PATROL dismounts the database, performs the defragmentation, and mounts the database again.

Checking database integrity

Because Exchange databases always fluctuate, you have the ability to run database integrity checks when you have problems or concerns. To run a database integrity check, you must use an account with the proper permissions.

When you run an integrity check, PATROL executes the ISINTEG utility in the following mode:

  • Utility is run in test mode.
  • Any errors found are fixed.
  • Log files and temporary databases generated by the ISINTEG are stored in the default locations.

Note

When you perform an integrity check on a database, the database and all other dependent Exchange Server services are temporarily stopped.

To check the integrity of a Mailbox Store

  1. Access the appropriate instanceNamesOfMailboxStores application class instance menu as described in Accessing KM Menu Commands.
  2. Select the Admin > Verify Integrity menu command.

To check the integrity of a Public Folder Store

  1. Access the appropriate instanceNamesOfPublicFolderStores application class instance menu as described in Accessing KM Menu Commands.
  2. Select the Admin > Verify Integrity menu command.

Defragmenting a database

You can run the database defragmentation program for a specific database in an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 environment. To defragment a database, you must use an account with the proper permissions. You must also have enough disk space available to run the defragmentation program. The defragment command performs a standard defragmentation of the selected database. No optional switches are used.

To defragment a Mailbox Store

  1. Access the appropriate instanceNamesOfMailboxStores application class instance menu as described in Accessing KM Menu Commands.
  2. Select the Admin > Defragment menu command.

To defragment a Public Folder Store
