Information
Note BMC PATROL for Microsoft Cluster Server 1.9 is not the latest version. The latest version is merged with the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers 5.0 KM as a component. To continue using it, import the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers 5.0. For more information, see BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Servers 5.0.

Performing node tasks

This topic describes how to perform the following node-based tasks for the BMC PATROL for Microsoft Windows Cluster Server KM:

Configuring annotation mode for node parameters

Warning

Note

Changing the annotation mode on the application class changes the annotation mode for all parameters in that application class

To configure annotation mode for node parameters, proceed as follows:

  1. Access the MCS_Nodes application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the PATROL Admin > Configure Annotation Mode menu command to display the Configure Annotation Mode dialog box.
  3. Click the appropriate radio button (On, Error, or Off) to select the level of annotation for the application class.

Defining node properties

Warning

Note

To perform this task, you must use an account that is within the domain and has cluster administration privileges.

To define node properties, proceed as follows:

  1. Access the MCS_Nodes application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the Node Admin > Properties menu command to display the Properties dialog box.
  3. Fill out the dialog box as described in the Using the properties dialog box topic.

Disabling auto restart for the Microsoft Cluster Service

You receive this notification when you try to stop the Microsoft Cluster Service on a cluster node without the toggle Auto Restart (part of the PATROL for Windows KM) being set to OFF.

Select NO and manually set the Auto Restart to OFF for the node.

Warning

Caution

Selecting YES to continue, without manually setting the node’s Auto Restart property to OFF, may cause PATROL to automatically restart the Cluster Service while it is being shut down. This can cause the Cluster Service to become unstable.

Evicting a node

Error
Warning

Before you can evict a node, you must stop the Microsoft Cluster Service. To stop the Cluster Service, go to the Starting or stopping the Microsoft Cluster Service topic.

To perform this task, you must use an account that is within the domain and has cluster administration privileges.

After you have stopped the Cluster Service, to evict a cluster node

  1. Access the MCS_Nodes application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the Node Admin > Evict Node menu command to display the Evict Node dialog box.
  3. Fill out the dialog box as described in the Using the evict node dialog box topic.

Excluding IP addresses

To exclude IP addresses from being monitored by the CheckIPResourceColl parameter

  1. Access the MCS_Groups application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the PATROL Admin > Exclude IP Address menu command to display the Exclude IP Address dialog box.
  3. In the Monitored IP Address(es) list, click on the IP addresses that you want to exclude from monitoring.
  4. Click the radio button next to the right arrow, ->.

The selected IP addresses are moved to the Excluded IP Address(es) list. Excluded IP addresses are displayed in the Desktop tree and data is collected from them by the ResourceStatus parameter.

Warning

Note

To remove IP addresses from the Excluded IP Address(es) list, click on the IP addresses and then click the radio button next to the left arrow, <-.

Maintaining the keyword list

The keyword list allows you to specify words that you want the KM to search for in the cluster log file. You can use keywords to trigger an alarm or a warning. When the KM finds a keyword in the cluster log file, the ClusterLogFileError parameter will alert you.

You can assign five words for a severe error (alarm) and five words for a minor error (warn).

Warning

Note

The search performed on the cluster log file is case sensitive. Therefore, the search will only retrieve the word the way you enter it in the keyword list. For example, if you entered the word lower as a keyword but you search the log file for the word Lower, it will not find any occurrences of lower.

To add words to the keyword list, proceed as follows:

  1. Access the MCS_Nodes application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the PATROL Admin > Maintain Keywords menu command to display the Maintain Keywords dialog box.
  3. Fill out the dialog box as described in the Using the maintain keywords dialog box topic.

Pausing and resuming nodes

Warning

Note

To perform this task, you must use an account that is within the domain and has cluster administration privileges.

To pause or resume a node, proceed as follows:

  1. Access the MCS_Nodes application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the Node Admin > Pause/Resume Node menu command to display the Node Pause/Resume dialog box.
  3. Fill out the dialog box as described in the Using the node pause/resume dialog box topic.

Setting a performance baseline

  1. Access the MCS_Performance application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the PATROL Admin > Set Baseline menu command to display the Set Baseline dialog box.
  3. Enter a number to use as the baseline value for the parameters AvWorkLoad and WorkLoadDelta.

Starting or stopping the Microsoft Cluster Service

Warning

Note

To perform this task, the account you use to stop the Microsoft Cluster Service must have permissions to stop and start Windows Services.

To start or stop the Cluster Service on a specific node, perform the following steps:

  1. Access the MCS_Nodes application class menu as described in Accessing KM menu commands.
  2. Choose the Node Admin > Cluster Service Stop/Start menu command to display the Service Start/Stop dialog box.
  3. Click the appropriate button (Start Service or Stop Service) to start or stop the Cluster Service.
