Configuring a Geo PCL definition

To monitor performance compliance by geographic area for a specific page Watchpoint, you select whether to monitor page-render time or end-to-end time, specify the areas (or zones) to monitor, and set values to indicate users are satisfied, tolerating, or frustrated with performance in each zone.

To perform this procedure, you must have Operator-level access, or higher.

Before you begin

Identify or define the page Watchpoint for which you want to monitor performance compliance.

To configure a Geo PCL definition

  1. In the Real User Analyzer, point to Administration > Thresholds and problem detection, and click Geographic Performance Compliance Levels (Geo PCLs).
  2. On the Action menu, click Add.
  3. Select the Set name and description tab and:
    1. In the Name box, type a name for the definition.
      For example, if you run an online bookselling application called World Books, you could use World Books as the Geo PCL name. BMC recommends that you use the same name as the monitored web application.
    2. In the Description box, type a meaningful description of the Geo PCL.
      You could indicate the monitored web application and the geographical location — for example, Monitors end-user experience of World Books application in China.
    3. In the Watchpoint list, select a Page Watchpoint (for example, Traffic to World Books Watchpoint).
    4. In the Performance metric section, click the appropriate option:
      • Page-Render-Time (PRT)
      • End-to-End

    5. Click > (the right arrow).
  4. On the Action menu in the lower half of the Select zones tab, click Add.
  5. Define the zone that monitors traffic from China by specifying the following parameters:
    1. In the Name box, type a name for the zone (for example, Traffic from China).
    2. In the Description box, type a description (for example, Monitors traffic from China).
    3. From the Zone template list, select the appropriate template (for example, China).
      A tree hierarchy for the selected zone is displayed in the lower part of the configuration screen.
    4. In the tree, identify the zone:
      • To monitor traffic statistics for the entire country or region, select the box for it.
      • To specify individual areas within the country or region, click + (Expand) and select the areas that interest you.
        For each selected area, the system displays a bubble on the Global-Application-Delivery-dashlet. If you select only a country or a region at the top of the tree, the dashlet displays only one bubble.
    5. Click Save.
      The zone becomes activated, and you are returned to the Select zones tab.

    6. (Optional) Starting with step 4, repeat the procedure to add more zones.
      For example, if most of your customers are located in China and on the West Coast of the United States (California, Washington, and Oregon), you would use the North America (Western) template and select the relevant areas.

      Note

      You can associate an area with only one zone in a given Geo PCL definition.

    7. Click > (the right arrow).
       The system saves your details and the Customize PCLs tab becomes active.
  6. In the Customize PCLs tab, assign Tolerating and Frustrated thresholds to every zone that you have configured.
    You can type a value or select from the following suggested values:
    • from Global — Select a value to populate the Geo PCL with values according to global system settings.
    • from Watchpoint — Select a value to populate the Geo PCL with values configured in the Watchpoint.
    • from User — Select a value to populate the Geo PCL with values that you previously used for the zone.
      Because you know that latency will be longer for traffic coming from China (compared to traffic from the US), you want the performance thresholds to be higher than those that you configure for areas in the West Coast of the United States.
  7. Click Save.

To enable the system to start monitoring with the Geo PCL definition, activate the Geo PCL definition.

To activate a Geo PCL definition

  1. In the Real User Analyzer, point to Administration > Thresholds and problem detection, and click Geographic Performance Compliance Levels (Geo PCLs).
  2. In the row for a given Geo PCL definition, click ON.

    The system now shows the World Books Geo PCL definition that collects traffic for the areas in China and the selected U.S. states. You can display data for the Geo PCL definition on the Global Application Delivery dashlet.
