The Notifications tab allows you to configure notifications. You can configure conditions to continuously monitor logs by getting real-time events (along with a report) delivered to your email address or to send events to BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management.

This topic contains the following information:

Before you begin

  • Create a saved search for which you want to create a notification. For more information, see Managing saved searches.
  • Create an external configuration that you can use while creating a notification.
For more information about configuring the supported external systems, see Integrating .
For more information about configuring the SMTP server, see Setting up emails.

To add a notification, on the Administration > Notifications tab, click Add Notification, provide the following information, and click Save.

Field

Description

Notification Details

Saved Search

Select the saved search for which you want to create a notification.

Note: Saved searches with custom time range are not displayed in this list.

Depending on the option you select, the following fields are automatically populated with the details of the saved search:

  • Search String
  • Search Duration
  • Name
  • Description

For more information about creating a saved search, see Managing saved searches.

Search String

The search string that is a part of the saved search is automatically displayed in this field.

This value cannot be modified, because the field is disabled.

Search Duration

(Optional) Select the duration for which the notification must be run, depending on the time range of the saved search.

By default, this field is automatically populated with the option used by the saved search. You can change it by selecting one of the following options:

  • Last execution to current execution
  • Last 15 minutes
  • Last 60 minutes
  • Last 24 hours
  • Last 7 days
Notification Type

(Optional) Select one of the following:

  • (Default) Alert: To log an event on BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management or a particular BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management cell, or to send an email notification alert.
For information about the details for configuring an alert, see Specifying details for configuring an alert.
  • Report: To send an email notification and optionally attaching a PDF report containing details about the search string.

When you select this option, an email is sent containing the search string, the result count, and a link that takes you to the specific search context. Furthermore, you can select whether or not to attach a report and include log entries in the report.

Note: By default, the report provides details about search results displayed on the Search tab within one minute. To change this time limit, you can add the indexing.psJobGetMoreTimeoutInmsec property by navigating to the searchserviceCustomConfig.properties file. This property defines the time limit (in milliseconds) after which the search (including notifications and views) times out. For more information, see Modifying the configuration files.
For more information about the details for configuring a report, see Specifying details for configuring a report.
Name

Provide a name to identify this notification.

By default, this field is automatically populated with the saved search name that you selected.

Description

(Optional) Provide some additional information for this notification to act as a future reference.

By default, this field is automatically populated with the saved search description.

Scheduling

(Optional) Specify the time schedule when the notification must be sent.

By default, the schedule is set to every hour at zero minutes. You can specify a schedule for every hour, day, week, month, or year. Depending on the value selected in the first list (from left), you can select corresponding values in the subsequent lists.

Example: If you specify every week in the first list, then in the next list you need to specify the days, followed by hours (HH), and finally minutes (MM).

Your selection might appear as Every week on tuesday-wednesday,friday at 13-14,18 : 15,30. This selection means you want to schedule a notification for every week, say on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at the 13th, 14th, and 18th hours, and finally at the 15th and 30th minutes of those hours.

You can select (and clear) multiple values in the lists (except the first list) by clicking the values.

Note: By default, the product can execute approximately 100 notifications every minute with the notification thread pool size set to 10. Suppose you have 200 notifications scheduled to execute every minute, then it is recommended that you increase the notification thread pool size to 20. This is necessary to avoid delaying the notification triggers or missing them altogether. To increase the notification thread pool size, change the value of the notification.threadpool.size property (default 10) in the searchserviceCustomConfig.properties file. For more information, see Modifying the configuration files.

Specifying details for configuring an alert

The following table lists the information that you must specify for configuring an alert:

FieldDescription

Conditions

Number of results

Specify a condition to trigger a notification: if the number of results is to be less than (select <), equal to (select =), or more than (select >) the selected threshold (specify a number).

Example: If you set the number of results to greater than 100 (> 100). If the results for the search string exceed 100, a notification is automatically sent.

Event Route

BPPM: hostName_cellName

OR

BPPM-Cell:extConfigName

You can select a route depending on the external system with which you want to connect to log events:

  • BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management: The event route name is displayed in the format BPPM: hostName_cellName, where hostName and cellName refer to the host name and cell name of the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management server that you used while creating the external configuration for integrating with BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management.
Depending on the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management cells with which you want to connect for logging events, select one or more check boxes.
For more information about integrating with the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management server, see Integrating with BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management.

Note: To enable you to log events correctly into the cells selected, you need to ensure that the BAROC files are loaded on the selected cell.

For more information, see the following topics in the BMC ProactiveNet online documentation portal:

You can select one of the following options:
