This section lists the requirements and supported resources for the BMC PATROL for Amazon Web Services product.

PATROL Agent and consoles

PATROL Agent version 9.5.00 and one or more of the following consoles:

  • PATROL Console for UNIX
  • PATROL Console for Microsoft Windows
  • PATROL Central Operator – Web Edition
  • PATROL Central Operator – Microsoft Windows Edition
  • BMC ProactiveNet Operations Console 9.0 or later
  • BMC ProactiveNet Central Monitoring Administration Console 9.0 or later

PATROL Central consoles are not required, but a PATROL Agent is required on a host machine, and a PATROL Console for Microsoft Windows or a PATROL Console for UNIX is required to configure BMC PATROL for AWS initially.

Other required PATROL products

BMC PATROL installation utility version 9.5.00

Other optional PATROL products

  • Distribution Server
  • PATROL Configuration Manager
  • PATROL Knowledge Module (KM) for Event Management

Distribution Server is required only if you plan to use it to distribute the KM. Version 7.8.20 of the Distribution Server is currently supported by BMC PATROL for AWS.

PATROL Configuration Manager and the PATROL KM for Event Management are required if you plan to modify the product configuration. For more information, see Configuring PATROL for Amazon Web Services using PATROL Configuration Manager.

Security

The KM operates in all BMC PATROL security levels.

Port

The installation utility might require that you specify the port number for agents.

The default port number for agents is 3181.

Disk space

The disk space needed to install the product on Microsoft Windows and Linux is 80 MB.

This is an approximate amount of space needed to install BMC PATROL for AWS on the supported platforms.

OS accounts on Windows

Use the following guidelines when setting up a Windows account for BMC PATROL:

  • Before installing BMC PATROL, create a dedicated user account that is either a local or a domain account.
  • Accounts that are on a domain controller must be members of the domain Administrators group.
  • Do not use a built-in Administrator account.
  • If you are using a domain account, you must specify the NT domain with the user name.

 

OS accounts on UNIX or Linux

Use the following guidelines when setting up a UNIX or Linux account for BMC PATROL:

  • The account .login, .profile, .cshrc, and .kshrc files should not contain any customizations, such as aliases, non-default prompts, and umask settings other than 022.
    Do not use the root account.
  • The account must have permission to create directories and write the installation logs to the $HOME and /tmp directories on the computer where you are installing products.
  • The account must have ftp and telnet enabled.
  • The account must have access to a root account on the computer where BMC PATROL is installed.

 

Operating systems

The KM supports the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2003 (32-bit, 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 (32-bit, 64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
  • Windows Server 2012 (32-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x (32-bit, 64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.x (32-bit, 64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.x (32-bit, 64-bit)

 

Note

BMC products are certified for use on supported operating system versions. BMC does not explicitly test for OS patches/updates that are released after a BMC product is released.

BMC products should work fine with minor updates to these supported operating systems. For assistance, please contact BMC Customer Support.
