Foundation

The Foundation module contains the common forms, workflow, and data that are needed to support the applications.

It also provides a repository for the following data structures used by each BMC Remedy IT Service Management (BMC Remedy ITSM) application:

  • Organization
  • People
  • Support groups
  • Categorization (both organizational categorization and general categorization)

    Note

With version 7.5, the following structures were moved from BMC Remedy ITSM to BMC Atrium Core:

    • Company (tenancy definition and external company definition)
    • Location
    • Categorization (product categorization)

For more information about foundation data types, read the following topics:

There was a PDF published by BMC called "BMC Remedy IT Service Management 7.0 Architecture" (Oct. 2006) that contained ERDs of the foundation data components as well as the modules.  Are similar ERDs available for 8.1?  If not, can they be published, please?

    Thank you,

    Matt Reinfeldt

      Hell Matt,
Unfortunately, no corresponding ERDs are available for 8.1.

If they become available, we will publish them and that will be announced on the What's New page of the wiki.

Thank you, Bruce.  That's too bad, as those were very helpful in being able to describe to everyone how the components tie together.  Especially when talking to reporting teams.  If there's any way it could be looked at, I'm sure we would all greatly appreciate it!

        Thanks again!

Resurrecting this thread.  4 months after these posts, I find myself looking for the same information but I can’t tell if anything is underway to address the request.  How could there not be a similar document published for 8.x?  The Common Data Model for the CMDB seems to be updated very diligently, so clearly BMC recognizes the need.

          Hi Seth,

Unfortunately, there are no current plans to create ERDs for ITSM 8.1. I don't know if you have looked at the Communities thread started by Jason Miller (see Jason's note below about submitting an idea--- https://communities.bmc.com/ideas/1873), but in the related conversation thread, one of the senior product managers has provided a workaround that you can employ from Developer Studio (see the posting from David Easter). Is this of any help? The discussion in that thread might also help you to understand why ERDs are not currently planned for ITSM 8.1. Do you have any specific questions that you were hoping to have answered by the ERDs that I can track down for you?

David's recommendation is not a suitable work around. The Dev Studio tools will not provide a ERD. Those tools are focused on actions and yes you can find some relationships by following the actions but it is not a structural diagram of ITSM.

Agreed with Jason.  I actually got to this page from starting at the communities thread.

The use case that I see again and again is for skilled users, power users, report writers, and other system admins that want to understand the data in the ITSM schema.  What the fields are for, how the data is structured and related to one another, etc.  Again, the CDM handles this quite well - I'm still not sure why there is such disparity between the two products, particularly given how closely related they are.

I must have missed the rationale for not providing this information - can you summarize it here so that it's captured for posterity?  Thanks much.

I was looking at this more from a develoment/customization/support standpoint but you are are right this is needed for reporting as well.

Would you mind adding this use case to the Idea on BMC Communities?  We need to continue building our case for an ERD.

Done - you're right, it's the proper thing to do.  Is there any sort of threshold where BMC starts paying attention to the ideas, or is just more conversational between customers?

I think they are keeping an eye on them all but not really sure what the official process is.

Here is a recently published doc about the new process: http://media.cms.bmc.com/documents/BMC+Ideas+Overview.pdf

I came to this page looking for the 8.1 ERD also.  Like Matt I found the 7.0 one and was really hoping to find one for 8.1 (at least 8.0).

It doesn't seem like once an ERD is publish that later versions should be lacking one (of course BMC can choose to do what it wants).

I submitted an idea to provide ERDs in the BMC Communities: https://communities.bmc.com/communities/ideas/1873

It might be best if further postings on this topic are made in communities idea submission that Jason made. Community postings receive a lot more scrutiny by the people that need to hear what you are saying and a critical mass of comments there will get the kind of attention that this issue needs to affect change. I can, and will, also advocate from within, but all of your comments on the issue need to be heard in the same place.
