Virtual performance management is the ability to plan, monitor, and manage services in a dynamic virtualized environment.

Products involved

Following are the primary products involved in this use case:

  • BMC Atrium Core (BMC Atrium CMDB)
  • BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping
  • BMC Capacity Management

Prerequisites

BMC Atrium Discovery discovers physical and virtual servers as part of a scheduled or on-demand scan, and these servers are exported from BMC Atrium Discovery to the Discovery import dataset in the CMDB. The BMC Atrium CMDB Reconciliation Engine moves information on the servers from the BMC Atrium Discovery import dataset into the BMC Atrium CMDB production dataset.

Technical use case

  1. A service modeler using the BMC Atrium CMDB console validates that the new servers have been correctly related to applications or IT services in the service model.
  2. On a regular basis, BMC Capacity Management extracts server and service information from the CMDB and stores that information in the BMC Capacity Management database.
  3. BMC Capacity Management gathers performance and utilization data from physical and virtual servers, including mainframe servers.
  4. Using the collected performance and utilization information, a capacity planner uses the analysis and modeling capabilities of the BMC Capacity Management console. The analysis includes physical-to-virtual, virtual-to-virtual, and continuous improvement capabilities.
