Defining a Log Summary


Defining the Summary pane, you may select whether to see each of the following Summary pane sections: alerts, attachments, exceptions, crashes, operations and performance.

The main Contents section is always present.

Saving the Summary Definition

The Summary definition is saved with the saved log file.

To define a summary:

  1. Right-click the Summary pane, and select Define Summary from the popup menu. The Define Summary screen opens.
  2. Select any, or all, of the following options:
    • Alerts - select to display the alerts on the Summary pane.
    • Attachments - select to display attachments on the pane.
    • Exceptions - select to display exceptions on the Summary pane.
    • Crashes - select to display crashes on the Summary pane.
    • Operations - select operations that will be added to a Summary Section. Select the section name by entering a name or by selecting an operation in the list.
    • Customize - click to determine which operations will be displayed on the pane.
      • Upon clicking, the Operation Settings screen opens, allowing you to add operations by typing their names or checking them on the list.
      • You can select to display only failed operations, only successful operations, or both.
      • Click Advanced to include or exclude name or comment substrings from the display.
    • Performance - check to display operations that took more than a predefined limit. You can define the limit per operation by clicking Customize.

Applying a Summary Definition to a Log

When opening an ASL via the UI, there are two new options:

  • Apply log perspective: When selected, the perspective the log was saved with is applied to the newly opened log.
  • Apply log summary definition: When selected, the summary definition saved with the log is applied, and the log summary is generated according to it.

These two are by default activated (the default can be changed in the registry).

When dragging a log to open it, the defaults are used.

Exporting the Log Summary

To export the summary to a file:

  1. Right-click the Summary pane, and select Export Summary. You are prompted for a file name.
  2. The summary data will be saved into the file in XML format.

Saving the summary in addition to the log

The Save Log dialog has an Advanced option for saving a summary in addition to saving the log.

When selected, the summary is saved into an XML formatted-file. The file has the same name as the log file, with an XML extension, and is saved into the same folder as the log file.
