Requirements for a non-root user to run the installer

In Linux environments, BMC Digital Workplace  and Remedy with Smart IT can be installed by either a root or non-root user. Installing as a non-root user allows a user to maintain the Smart IT and BMC Digital Workplace  software without the assistance of a system administrator.

The User Experience patch is a patch to BMC Remedy IT Service Management that enables functionality for BMC Digital Workplace  and Smart IT.  In Linux and UNIX environments, this patch installer can also be run by either a root or non-root user.

This procedure is part of the Preparing for installation of BMC Digital Workplace and Smart IT process. Make sure that the previous steps in this process have been completed.

Before a non-root user runs the User Experience patch installer

If Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) is enabled, a system administrator must apply the workaround provided in Troubleshooting installation and upgrade issues in BMC Digital Workplace and Smart IT. Otherwise, installed the User Experience patch will fail.

A system administrator must ensure that the non-root user account has read, write, and execute (rwx) access to the following directories and their files on each server in the AR System server group:

• .profile file in your home directory (write and execute permission)
• opt/bmc
• /tmp
  
• JREHomeDirectory/bin (read and execute permission)
• JREHomeDirectory/lib (read and execute permission)

A system administrator must review (and potentially modify) the /etc/security/limits.conf file to ensure that the open files limit [ ulimit –n ] section of the shell is set to 16384.

Before a non-root user runs the BMC Digital Workplace  and Smart IT installer

A system administrator must ensure that the non-root user account has read, write, and execute (rwx) access to the following directories and their files on each server that will be part of the BMC Digital Workplace  and Smart IT cluster:

• .profile file in your home directory (write and execute permission)
• opt/bmc (If this directory does not exist, you must create it, and set the permissions.)
• /tmp
  
• JREHomeDirectory/bin (read and execute permission)
• JREHomeDirectory/lib (read and execute permission)

A system administrator must review (and potentially modify) the /etc/security/limits.conf file to ensure that the open files limit [ ulimit –n ] section of the shell is set to 16384.

When running the installer

When you install as a non-root user, you must update the system configuration files manually. The installation script prompts you to do so and instructs you to start a shell where you have root access or full read and write permission.

After installation of Smart IT and BMC Digital Workplace  is complete

To automatically start the Smart IT and BMC Digital Workplace  server when your computer restarts, you must ask your system administrator to change the system startup scripts accordingly.
