This documentation supports the 18.02 version of BMC Digital Workplace. To view the latest version, select the version from the Product version menu.

Installing the product license key and allocating user licenses

Before you can entitle users to services, you must apply a product license key to the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server and add the registered number of fixed user licenses to the tenant workspace. You can perform the licensing tasks from the command line via a shell script, or through the Remedy Mid Tier graphical interface.

Before you begin

Load the setup data, as described in Loading the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog tenant setup data

To prepare to install a license key and manage the user license count

  1. Obtain a server license key from BMC Support Central. See: Obtaining BMC Remedy license keys.
  2. Verify the required quantity of fixed user licenses; you require a fixed license for each user account that is used to log in to the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog application.
  3. Obtain credentials for the following accounts that will access the system:

    User accountExample name | password

BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server administrator

    dwpinstaller | Passw0rd!

BMC Digital Workplace Catalog application administrator

    dwpadmin | Passw0rd!

BMC Digital Workplace Catalog tenant administrator

    hannah_admin@calbroservices.com | Passw0rd!
    hannah_admin@petramco.com | Passw0rd!
  4. (Optional) To perform licensing tasks by using a graphical interface, configure a Remedy Mid Tier with access to manage the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server. For information, see Setting up a Remedy Mid Tier for system administration of the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server.

To perform licensing tasks from the command line

You can run a script on the server to install the server license key and set the fixed user license quantity.

  1. Log on to the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server.
  2. Go to the license installation script folder inside the folder where you extracted the installation files; for example: ~/Downloads/extracted_installation_files/apply_dwp_license.
  3. Run the apply_dwp_license.sh script and enter the requested details. If multiple tenants share the same BMC Digital Workplace Catalog application, you can run the apply_dwp_license.sh script for each tenant without applying a product license key.

Example: Install a server license key of GKB-1977 and set the quantity of fixed user licenses for the Calbro Services tenant to 5000:

Example of the apply_dwp_license.sh script prompts
    $ ./apply_dwp_license.sh
Enter the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog system administrator login name (dwpadmin): dwpadmin
    Password for dwpadmin: *********
Enter the tenant administrator login name (hannah_admin@calbroservices.com): hannah_admin@calbroservices.com
    Password for hannah_admin@calbroservices.com: *********
Do you want to add a BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server license (y/n): y
Enter the sever license key: GKB-1977
Enter the number of Fixed user licenses that are assigned to this tenant: 5000

Example: Use the same licensed server as Calbro Services, and set the quantity of fixed user licenses for the Petramco tenant to 2500:

Example of the apply_dwp_license.sh script prompts
    $ ./apply_dwp_license.sh
Enter the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog system administrator login name (dwpadmin): dwpadmin
    Password for dwpadmin: *********
Enter the tenant administrator login name (hannah_admin@calbroservices.com): hannah_admin@petramco.com
    Password for hannah_admin@calbroservices.com: *********
Do you want to add a BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server license (y/n): n
Enter the number of Fixed user licenses that are assigned to this tenant: 2500

To perform licensing tasks by using Remedy Mid Tier

If you prefer to perform the licensing tasks in a graphical interface, you can use the Remedy Mid Tier..

  1. Edit the placeholders in the following URL to match your server environment, and open the URL in a web browser to go to the AR System Shared Licenses page.

Example: Replace the server names in the direct URL to the AR System Shared Licenses page
    http://<server_with_midtier>:8080/arsys/forms/<digitalworkplace-catalog.example.com>/AR+System+Shared+Licenses
  2. Log in with the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog application administrator credentials; for example: dwpadminPassw0rd!.

    Note

If you receive the following error, you can safely ignore the message and continue:

ARWARN [59] Your login failed, but connected as a guest user.

This error occurs when the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server is not configured as the Remedy Mid Tier authentication server. For more information, see Setting up a Remedy Mid Tier for system administration of the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server.

  3. Click New request.
  4. For the License Type, select AR Server.

    Note

To set a quantity of fixed user licenses by using Remedy Mid Tier

If multiple tenants share the same BMC Digital Workplace Catalog application, you can log in as the administrator for each tenant to set the number of fixed licenses.

  1. Edit the placeholders in the following URL to match your server environment, and open the URL in a web browser to go to the AR System Licenses Console.

Example: Replace the server names in this direct URL to the AR System Licenses Console
    http://<server_with_midtier>:8080/arsys/forms/<digitalworkplace_catalog-sample.com>/AR+System+Licenses+Console
  2. Log on with the tenant administrator account credentials that was created when you loaded the initial tenant data; for example: hannah_admin@calbroservices.comPassw0rd!.

  3. Click Add New.
  4. For the License Type, select AR Server > AR User Fixed.

    Note

The Current Host ID in the top right corner of the form header might be blank.

To test that the licenses have been applied

  1. Edit the placeholders in the following URL to match your server environment, and open the URL in a web browser to go to the BMC Digital Workplace Catalog login page.

Example: Replace the server name in this direct URL to open the application
    http://<digitalworkplace-catalog.example.com>:8008/myitsbe
  2. Log on with the tenant administrator account credentials; for example: hannah_admin@calbroservices.comPassw0rd!.
  3. Go to Entitlements.
  4. Create a new virtual marketplace entitlement group and add users.
If there is a problem with either the license key or number of fixed user licenses, the system will report an error.

The ./apply_dwp_license.sh Script only works for non-test Licenses, eg. for licenses that do not need an expire Date. The script cannot handle the "Expire Date" Parameter.

We did not use a Midtier to load the license. It is much easier to use the ARUser tool --> Available in the AR System Client Tools.
