Cognos service is not running

The following table lists the possible reasons why the Cognos service might not be running and provides possible solutions.

Reason

Solution

The host name entry is missing in the hosts file, which is located in the following directory:

  • (Microsoft Windows) C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
  • (UNIX) /etc

Ensure that the host name entry exists in the hosts file, and restart the Cognos service.

The Cognos service is running with a stale connection to the portal database.

Restart the Cognos service.

The portal database is not running.

Ensure that the portal database is running, and restart the Cognos service.

The Authentication Service is running with a stale connection to the reports data warehouse.

Restart the Authentication Service.

The reports data warehouse is not running.

Ensure that the reports data warehouse is running, and restart the Authentication Service.
