Administering the resource usage recommendations

As a cloud planner, you can use the Resource usage page to analyze the idle VMs and overallocated VMs, and take appropriate actions on them by reviewing the provided recommendations. You can decide to ignore the recommendations, commit VMs to implement the recommendations manually, or request an automatic implementation (for AWS only).

To access the Resource Usage page, in the navigation pane of the TrueSight console, select Cloud Cost Control and click Cost Optimization. By default, the Resource Usage page is displayed.

The following video (5:56) provides information about the new automated recommendations in Amazon Web Services instances.

To administer the resource usage recommendations

  1. Review the recommendations.

Based on the resource usage recommendations you want to administer, review one of the following:

  2. Perform the appropriate action on the recommended VMs.

By default, all VMs for which the recommendations are generated, are displayed in the Recommended tab.

Based on your recommendations review, select one of the following actions from the list:

    • When you do not want to implement the suggested recommendations for certain VMs, you can ignore those VMs by clicking Ignore from the actions list. For example, you might not want to terminate a production server though it is categorized as idle and recommended to be terminated. In this case, you can ignore this production server.
The ignored VMs are then displayed under the Ignored tab. Also, the Estimated Savings values are updated accordingly. For example, the total idle VMs to terminate are 100 and estimated savings are $10,000. When you ignore 5 VMs with their total estimated savings as $800, the idle VMs to terminate displays 95 with estimated savings as $9200.
You can choose to commit the ignored VMs or revert them to the Recommended state for further actions.
    • When you are sure about implementing the recommendations for VMs, you can mark those VMs by clicking Commit from the actions list. The committed VMs are then displayed under the Committed tab. You can then export this report of committed VMs and share it with an IT administrator for manual implementation of recommendations.
You can choose to ignore the committed VMs or revert them to the Recommended state for further actions.

    • For AWS VMs, you can request for automatic implementation of recommendations by clicking Request Action from the actions list. For example, if you request action on 10 VMs that are recommended to be resized, an administrator need not spend time resizing each VM manually.  Instead, all VMs will be resized automatically according to their suggested configurations.
When you request the action for automatic implementation, you cannot revert it. The warning message is displayed indicating the same.
The requested VMs are then displayed under the Action Requested tab.

      Note

You can view Request Action in the list only if TrueSight Cloud Cost Control is integrated with TrueSight Cloud Cost Service. For more information, see Integrating with TrueSight Cloud Cost Service to enable automated implementation of recommendations.

When you perform a certain action on VMs, those VMs are moved under the respective status tab and the icon associated with them also displays the current status. The recommendation details window displays the actions that you can perform on the VM.

For example, consider the following screenshots:

StatusEfficiency/status iconRecommendations details window
Recommended

Displays a list of recommended VMs and the efficiency icon to view the recommendations details.

For a recommended VM, you can commit or ignore the recommendations.
For AWS VM, you can request an action for automatic implementation of recommendations.

Ignored

Displays a list of ignored VMs and the updated icon to view the recommendations details.

You can choose to commit the ignored VMs or revert them to the Recommended state for further actions.

Committed

Displays a list of committed VMs and the updated icon to view the recommendations details.

You can choose to ignore the committed VMs or revert them to the Recommended state for further actions.

Action Requested

Displays a list of action requested VMs and the updated icon to view the recommendations details.

When you request the action, you cannot revert it and actions menu is disabled.
You can click the link provided to know more details on the action requested workflow. It opens the TrueSight Cloud Cost Service dashboard and provide details on workflow requested such as all recommended actions and whether they are implemented are not.

You can save an offline copy of the page as a PDF or an Excel file for reference. To do so, click  and select Export to PDF or Export to Excel.
