Managing Resource pools

A resource pool is a dynamic aggregation of resources that are associated with a specific user, cost center, or department in your organization. The resources can be provisioned in the public cloud and the on-premises infrastructure. You can use a resource pool to analyze the cost, usage, and budget of the resources.  As a cloud administrator, you can add and manage a resource pool. To assign the required resources to a resource pool, you need to define conditions by using a combination of cloud accounts, tags, and service (resource) names. For example, you can add a resource pool of services that are provisioned in the AWS cloud and that have the tags "devops","production" applied to them.

You can filter resources based on one or more conditions and assign them to a resource pool. For example, if you have a different tagging policy for resources based on cloud providers, you can create separate conditions for each cloud provider in a resource pool.

Adding a resource pool

  1. On the Cloud Cost dashboard, select Configure  > Resource Pools.

  2. Click Create Resource Pool
The Add Resource Pool page opens.
  3. Enter a unique name and description for the resource pool.
  4. Define the criteria to assign resources to the resource pool. By default no Accounts, Tags, and Services are associated with the resource pool.
When you select multiple entities, the resources are filtered based on all of them (the AND criteria is applied).
    1. Select resources by account.
      1. Click the  icon to open the Select Account page.
      2. Select the accounts from which you want to include the resources.
    2. Select resources by tags.
      1. Click the  icon to open the Select Tags page.
      2. Select the tags based on which you want to include the resources. Tags are filtered according to the selected accounts.

When you select multiple tags...Then they are applied on the resources with the...
within the same tag categoryOR condition. So if a resource has even one of the tags applied, it will be selected.
        from different tag categoriesAND condition.

    3. Select resources by services.
      1. Click the  icon to open the Select Services page.
      2. Select the services that you want to include to this resource pool. Services are filtered according to the selected accounts.
All resources that are part of selected services will be added to this resource pool.

  5. (Available only if you have configured the Showback settings) If you have configured the cost-bearer tag in the Showback configuration, you can associate the tag values with this resource pool. Based on the values you select, the cost of the shared resource will be calculated. This option is enabled only if you have configured the tags in the Showback configuration.
    1. Click the  icon to open the Select Tag Values page.
    2. Select the tag values that you want to associate with this resource pool. Tag values are filtered according to the selected tags.

When you select multiple tags values...Then they are applied on the resources with the
within the same tag value categoryOR condition. So if the tag has even one of the tag values, it will be selected.
from different tag value categoriesAND condition.
  6. Save the configuration.
The Resource Pools page displays a quick summary of the total resources in the resource pool and the name of the service providers.

The Dashboard > Resource Pool tab displays information of the newly created resource pools. If you have configured the Showback feature, the cost of the shared resources will be distributed according to the formula defined in the tags.

The monthly cost for the resource pools is calculated once in 12 hours to optimize server utilization. Therefore, the resource pool cost will be eventually consistent. To view the current cost for a resource pool immediately, edit the resource pool.

Editing a resource pool

  1. On the Cloud Cost dashboard, select Configure  > Resource Pools.
The page displays a list of all the resource pools.
  2. Click the name of the resource pool that you want to modify.
The Edit Resource Pool page opens that displays the conditions in the resource pool.
  3. Modify the existing filter criteria or add more resources to the resource pool.

    1. Add resources by account.
      1. Click the  icon to open the Select Account page.
      2. Select the accounts from which you want to include the resources.
    2. Add resources by tags.

      1. Click the  icon to open the Select Services page.
      2. Select the services that you want to include to this resource pool. Services are filtered according to the selected accounts.
All resources that are part of selected services will be added to this resource pool.

Repeat this step if you want to define additional resource conditions.
  4. (Available only if you have configured the Showback settings) If you have configured the cost-bearer tag in the Showback configuration, associate the tag values with this resource pool. Based on the values you select, the cost of the shared resource will be calculated. This option is enabled only if you have configured the tags in the Showback configuration.
    1. Click the  icon to open the Select Tag Values page.
    2. Select the tag values that you want to associate with this resource pool.
