Configuring the Golden model results template

The Golden model results template enables you to display charts that are generated from the last run of a model that is in Golden state. Use this template to create a custom view or add a page to a custom view in the TrueSight console.

You can use the following models in this template:

Time-forecasting model : Generates the future behavior trend for one or more performance metrics by observing their past behavior captured over time.
Extrapolation model : Generates an estimate of metric values as a function of other metrics. Through an initial correlation analysis of existing data, extrapolation estimates the value of a particular metric when the value of another metric changes.
Queueing network model : Generates the future system utilization, throughput, queue length, and response time based on the impact of business drivers that are running on systems. With this model, you can simulate the impact of a change in the value of an entity (system or business driver) on the metrics.

Before you begin

Ensure that the following tasks are complete:

The model (time-forecasting, extrapolation, or queueing network) that you want to select in the template is created.
The selected model is in the Golden state. For more information, see Working-with-custom-statistics.

To configure the template

Open the view page with the Golden model results template:
- For a new view, add a view and select Golden model results as the template. For detailed steps, see Adding-and-managing-views.
- For a new page in an existing view, add a page and select Golden model results as the template. For detailed steps, see To add a page to an existing custom view.
In the view page, specify a title for the page and in the Golden Model field, select the required scenario of the Golden model.
If you link to the output view page of this template from another view page that is configured to use page parameters of the Golden model results template, then the Golden model that you select on this configuration page is overridden. For more information, see Advanced configuration.
If required, specify a different label for the entity filter. Depending on the selected golden model, specific filter label field (Business Driver Filter Label or System Filter Label) is displayed. For example, if the selected golden model does not have associated business drivers, then the corresponding filter field is not displayed. The label that you specify in the filter field is displayed on the output view page.
Information
- You can use the filter label to manage the behavior of the filters across different pages of a view. For example, to retain the System filter value while navigating across different pages of a view, specify the same name for System Filter Label in the required pages of the view. If you do not want to retain the filter values across different pages of a view, you can specify different names for the filter label in different pages.
- None of the page filters are available when you select a queueing network golden model. Four charts are always displayed for this model irrespective of the number of entities that the model contains. If a model has multiple entities, then their values are displayed in the same set of charts.
(Optional) To add a custom text, click Add custom text. To update an existing custom text, click Change in the custom text panel. You can add descriptions, instructions, links, or any other textual information for the users of the view page. You can use markdown tags to format the content of custom text and to add images, links, and tables. For example, you can add a description such as “Displays performance metrics for Payroll application”, or a label such as "NY Datacenter - Capacity Metrics". In the Editor panel, specify the following, and click Apply:
- Title: Type the required title for the custom text.
- Always expand custom text: Use this option to toggle the display of custom text as expanded or collapsed.
- Editor: Type the required content and format it by using markdown tags such as * to create an unordered list and # to increase the font size. A preview of the formatted content is displayed in the Preview section.
- Insert image: Enable you to add an image. The selected image is displayed in the Preview section.

Click Save.The custom view page is created with the defined configuration. You can filter the charts in the view page by applying the appropriate filter such as domain, tag, and system.

Advanced configuration

Every custom view template supports some parameters that you can use to display data for a specific entity in its target view page. These parameters can be used when you link to the custom view template from another view page. The Golden model results template supports two parameters: modelid and scenarioid. The data mart that is used in the source view page must have the Meaning property defined for these parameters (Model Identifier and Scenario Identifier). Otherwise, the linking will not work.

When a scenario name link in the source view page is clicked, the page parameters modeid and scenarioid are used to identify the corresponding model and scenario and the target view page displays the corresponding scenario,

Note that the parameters are added as suffix in the target view page URL as shown in the following screenshot.

Use case

Consider the following use case scenario related to the custom view page with the Golden model results template using an extrapolation model.

Analyzing the current resource utilization and predicting the future resource requirements

Scenario

The ACME Web Service portal enables customers to place and manage their customer orders. On an average, this portal handles 350k site visits and 6.6k orders on a daily basis. Paul, the Capacity Planner of ACME, wants to determine the maximum number of orders, or site/page visits, or backend operations that can be handled considering the current capacity of CPU.

To enable Paul to efficiently manage the current capacity of resources and forecast the future requirements, Alan, the TrueSight Capacity Optimization administrator, performs the following tasks:

Configures the required data mart and model (TrueSight Capacity Optimization console)
Uses data marts and models to create a custom view (TrueSight console) by configuring the following templates:
- Summary table
- Golden model results (using an Extrapolation model)

Prerequisite tasks

Let us assume that Alan has already completed that following prerequisite tasks:

Identify the required metrics and entities (domain, systems and business drivers).
Configure the required ETL modules for collecting data from the required systems. For more information, see Overview-of-ETLs.
OR
Configure the Gateway Server and Capacity Agent and enable Auto-create ETLs option. For more information, see Managing-and-maintaining-Gateway-Servers and Collecting-data-via-Capacity-Agents.
Warning
Note
The ETL modules or Auto-create ETLs automatically add the domain and associated entities to the workspace. Alternately, you can manually add the required domain and entities in the workspace. For more information, see Adding-system-and-business-driver-entities-to-a-domain.

Workflow

To configure the required data marts and models

In the TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, create an Extrapolation model (EM) with correlation between the CPU capacity and number of site/page visits or orders that can be handled per hour. For example, if the CPU capacity threshold is set to 70%, this model will provide predictions for maximum number of orders that can be handled at the threshold CPU capacity. Paul can use this information to determine whether the existing CPU capacity will be able to sustain an increase of business drivers, and what the average CPU load would be in this condition.
Promote the EM model to Golden and perform the following tasks:
1. Set the Execution period for the EM model.
2. Select an option for the Statistics published at each execution field.

The following image shows a sample extrapolation model.
Using the prediction scenario of the EM model, create a SQL-based data mart (CPU capacity) for extracting the hourly utilization details for the CPU capacity. Set the Purpose of data mart to Build Capacity View in TrueSight Console. For more information, see Creating-a-SQL-based-data-mart-for-a-custom-view-in-the-TrueSight-console.

To add a custom view

In the TrueSight console, add a custom view (Web portal service). Using the Summary table template for the view page (Extrapolation summary) using the Summary table template with the CPU capacity data mart. For more information, see Adding-a-custom-view.
Add a view page (Extrapolation charts) using the Golden model results template with EM as the model.
Use the Add page groups option to reorder the view pages as follows:
Add a new page Extrapolation and move the Extrapolation summary and Extrapolation charts under the new page.

(Optional): Configure the filters in the view pages according to the requirement. For more information, see Using filtering options in the TrueSight console.
(Optional): Configure the rendering options in the view pages to add link to other pages in the view.
For example:
On the Extrapolation > Extrapolation summary page, use rendering option to add link in the column listing system name to the Extrapolation > Extrapolation charts page.For more information, see Renderer-options-in-custom-views.

After the Web Service Portal view is configured, Alan grants the permissions required to use the view to Paul. For more information, see Configuring-users-and-user-groups.

To use the custom view

Paul performs the following steps to use the Web Service Portal view (custom view):

In the TrueSight console, select > Capacity Views > Custom Views > Web Service Portal.
The Web Service Portal view is displayed.
To view the hourly utilization details for the CPU capacity, select Extrapolation > Extrapolation Summary.
The Extrapolation Summary page is displayed.
To view correlation between the CPU capacity and number of site/page visits or orders that can be handled per hour, select Extrapolation > Extrapolation Charts or click the capacity for the required business driver in Extrapolation > Extrapolation Summary.
The Extrapolation Charts page is displayed.
