Enabling email notification of system alerts with SMTP
BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring alerts users via email when certain system events occur (for example, a cryptographic key failure or a system restart that is due to a device update).
To use email-based features, that will handle the traffic and define email notification groups that will receive email alerts.
SMTP connection security
When you configure SMTP settings, the security level that you select must correspond to the security configuration of your SMTP server. To determine the appropriate SMTP security level, use the following table or contact the mail server administrator.

No security is applied. The system sends all email messages to the SMTP server in plain text.
When the connection is established, the device uses TLS/SSL to secure the connection. This protocol typically uses port 465.
The device opens an insecure connection and then uses STARTTLS to open a secure TLS/SSL conversation. This protocol typically uses the default port 25.
The device opens a non-secure connection and then uses STARTTLS to open a secure TLS/SSL conversation. If secure communication cannot be established, the system makes a second attempt with a non-secure connection. This protocol typically uses the default port 25.
For email-based features to function properly, configure a connection between this device and an SMTP server. To perform this procedure, you must have Operator-level access, or higher.
Before you begin
Before you establish a connection with the SMTP server, you must know the following information:
- IP address of the SMTP server that will deliver emails generated by the component
- Port that the specified SMTP server will use
- Email addresses that the component will use to send and receive emails
- Security level for the connection
If your SMTP server is configured to send authentication credentials, you must know the user name and password that recipients will use.
To configure a сonnection with the SMTP server
On the Real User Analyzer, go to the Administration > Integration > Mail server page.
- On the Action menu, click Edit.
- In the SMTP Server box, enter the IP address of the SMTP server that will deliver emails generated by the device.
- In the SMTP Port box, enter the port number that the SMTP server will use.
By default, the device uses port 25.
In the From box, enter the email address that will populate the From field in the BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring email messages.
In the Reply to box, enter the email address that will receive replies to emails generated by BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring.
- In the authentication list, perform one of the following actions:
- If your SMTP server is configured to send authentication credentials, click Use Authentication and fill in the Username and Password boxes.
If your SMTP server is not configured to send authentication credentials, click Don't use authentication.
Contact the mail server administrator to determine the necessary authentication settings.
- In the Connection security level list, click the appropriate security level, for example, STARTTLS.
- Click Save.
Connection with the SMTP server is configured.
