Preparing to install Infrastructure Management server with Oracle

Before the BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server is installed, you must configure Oracle so that it can be used as the BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server database by performing the following tasks:

  1. Creating an Oracle database instance, as described in Creating an Oracle database instance for the Infrastructure Management Server.
  2. Configuring your Oracle database environment by using one of the following methods:

BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server supports the following Oracle environments:

  • (for Oracle 11g) A single Oracle database instance
  • (for Oracle 12c) Pluggable Database (PDB)
  • Oracle RAC

Note

Your Oracle database administrator must create and configure the Oracle instances and schema objects required for Infrastructure Management.

Other preinstallation tasks

  • Oracle must be installed and running as a basic database instance.

  • Oracle must be configured for remote SYSDBA connectivity.

  • SQLPlus or the Oracle Instance Client with SQLPlus option must be installed and configured on the computer in which the BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server is installed. This is needed for validation, and to run the set_system_parameter_oracle_pnet.sql script. It is also convenient to control and access the database from the the BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server during the installation process. Infrastructure Management does not require this client. For more information, see Creating an Oracle database instance for the Infrastructure Management Server.

  • Create a new user in the Oracle database. This user is used exclusively by Infrastructure Management to create reports and view the default views created during the Infrastructure Management installation. You will configure this user in the Configure Oracle Report User screen of the Infrastructure Management installation.
  • The directory and the file system in which the Infrastructure Management tablespace and temporary tablespace database files are created is required. These files are created by the Infrastructure Management installer.

  • The listener for the Oracle database instance must be configured and running.

  • (For Oracle 12c) Add the USE_SID_AS_SERVICE_LISTENER=on parameter in listener.ora and reload the listener settings with the lsnrctl reload command.
  • The port number on which the database listener is listening for connections must be provided.
  • The Oracle database instance must be dedicated to the BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server.
  • Copy the Oracle folder that contains the set_system_parameter_oracle_pnet.sql script to the Oracle server.
  • The Oracle database must be configured to use a system parameter file (SPFILE) to ensure persistent database system parameter settings. The set_system_parameter_oracle_pnet.sql script references the SPFILE file and displays error messages if the file does not exist

  • Tablespace names for Infrastructure Management and related temporary tablespace names must be provided if they different from the default names provided by the Infrastructure Management installer. The Infrastructure Management installer creates these tablespaces and related database files.
  • Ensure that the system tablespaces SYSTEM, SYSAUX have a minimum 2 GB of free space.

  • (For Oracle 12c) The PDBs (Pluggable Databases) must be in open mode.
