Monitoring resources in an organized manner

A group is a collection of monitored resources that you define. To make information easier to find and manage, you can create groups that correspond to real-world relationships (such as by city, a specific department, or the type of resource, etc.).  

To check the roles and authorization profiles to create and monitor the groups

You need different types of roles and authorization profiles to create and to monitor groups. The following table lists some of the roles and authorization profiles. For more information about how to create them, see  Managing users and user groups and Managing authorization profiles

Assume that the preceding user groups, users, and authorization profiles are already created. The following section explains about roles that are required to achieve different group configuration tasks.

• User role, and authorization profile required to create groups: To create groups, you need to be a super admin, and have Solution Administrator authorization profile.
• User role, and authorization profile required to monitor groups: To monitor groups, you need to be an operator, and have IT Operations user authorization profile.

To set up the groups to enable monitoring from the TrueSight console

To create a manual group by choosing different devices or monitoring instances or to view the synchronized groups, ensure that your TrueSight Infrastructure Management server is registered as a component with the TrueSight Presentation Server. For more information, see 

Sam can create the group to monitor the Linux CPUs of servers in Perth by using following the steps:

1. Log on to the TrueSight console.

2. Go to Configuration > Groups and click action menu next to Group Configuration.

   Note

   The Create Rule Based Group icon is visible only on the Manual Groups tab. You cannot perform add, update, or delete operations on synchronized groups because these groups are automatically synchronized from Infrastructure Management.

3. Click Create Rule Based Group.
   Because you are creating a rule-based group, the Type field displays Rule Based Group.

4. Specify the Group Name as perth_servers

5. Specify the description as "this group will monitor all the Linux CPUs of servers in Perth"

6. Do not specify any information for the Parent Groups field.

7. Do not specify any information for the Child Groups field.

8. Click the + sign to add a rule to the group.

   While creating groups, assume that devices have names based on the location of each office. For example, If devices in Perth will have names starting with "PERTH" or containing the text "PERT" you can create a group that consists of only those devices that belong to the Perth office.

   If Sam wants to create a group to monitor servers in Perth office having Linux CPUs , the rules that he needs to set is shown in the following diagram:
   

9. Click Preview to view the devices and monitors that are added to the group.

10. Click Save. Sam has created a group named perth_servers

In step 3, Sam created a group named as perth_servers to monitor all the resources in Perth. To monitor the newly created group, perform the following steps:

1. Logon to the TrueSight console and select Monitoring > Groups.
2. To search, click the search icon  and enter the search text as "Perth". Click the search icon again or press Enter to start the search.
   The newly created group perth_servers shall be displayed.
3. For detailed analysis and remediation, click the Group name that displays the Group Details page on the TrueSight console. The Group details page provides you with comprehensive information about each group.
