Administering service models

A service model is a generic term for a logical representation of the relationship between IT infrastructure components and higher-level logical entities such as technical services, business services, and organizations. Service models can belong to several categories such as network topology, dataflow, dependency, and impact. Although IT Operators can view service models, only Service Administrators can create them. A service model is a collection of configuration items (CIs) that represents a business service. A business service can have one or more business processes. Each business process can contain several functional applications, each of which can have multiple IT CIs. A service model contains the processes and shows how the CIs are interconnected. 

Creating service models using the BMC CMDB Explorer

You can create service models and manage the configuration items (CIs) that represent your IT environment using BMC Configuration Management Database (BMC CMDB).  For more information see, Configuring service models using CMDB forms.

Creating service models using BMC Impact Model Designer


You cannot use Impact Model Designer (IMD) to create service models as IMD is Flash based and Flash EOL is on 31 Dec 2020. However, you can use the HARMAN browser to continue using IMD. Alternatively, you can use CMDB forms to create service models. For more information, see Configuring service models using CMDB forms.

To create a service model in BMC Impact Model Designer, you must perform the following steps:

  • Find or create CIs in BMC Atrium Explorer or Impact Model Designer.
  • Assign CIs to a cell.
  • Define CI relationships.
  • Assign schedules to CIs.
  • Promote the service model and publish objects to cells.
