pw license

The pw license commands display license information and allow you to make updates to the Infrastructure Management license.

To view help information, run the following command:

pw license

The following pw license commands are available:

  • pw license fingerprint
  • pw license list
  • pw license update
  • pw license usage

pw license fingerprint

The pw license fingerprint command displays the fingerprint for the server. The fingerprint is based on the address of the server computer. The use of the fingerprint depends on the type of license desired and can be included in the license file to restrict the installation to a specific server computer. The syntax for this command is as follows:

pw license fingerprint

pw license list

The pw license list command displays server license information, such as expiration date and node locking. The values displayed depend on the specific license used for an installation. The syntax for the command is follows:

pw license list

The command output depends on the specific license used for an installation. In the following example, the license has no expiration date and is not node locked into a particular server computer.

pw license list
Feature : Server, Expiration : None, NodeLocked : false

pw license update

The pw license update command loads or updates the license information on the server, depending on whether it is a new installation or upgrade installation, respectively.

Note

This command prompts you to restart some system processes but does not cause any data loss.

The syntax for this command is as follows:

pw license update
Applying license for the Infrastructure Management Server

Apply the Infrastructure Management license.

Note

  • Applying or updating the license restarts the JServer process and forces all active user sessions on the Infrastructure Management Server to log off.
  • You must have root privileges to apply the license.

When you purchased the product, you would have received the following license files in a .zip file from your BMC Software representative:

  • proactivenet.lic
  • proactivenet.sign
To apply the license on Microsoft Windows systems
  1. Copy the .zip file to the Infrastructure Management Server under the installationDirectory\pw\licenses directory. (Example: C:\Program Files\BMC Software\TrueSight\pw\licenses)
  2. Unzip the file.
  3. To load the license data, run the command: pw lic update.
  4. Type y to restart JServer.

If the license update is successful, an empty command prompt is displayed.

To apply the license on Linux systems
  1. In binary mode, copy the .zip file to the Infrastructure Management Server under the /usr/pw/licenses directory.
  2. Unzip the file.
  3. To load the license data, run the command: pw license update.
  4. Type y to restart JServer.

If the license update is successful, an empty command prompt is displayed.

Do not move or delete the license file

- After loading the license, moving or changing the license files can cause a number of errors.

- When the Infrastructure Management is installed, a hidden .pbk file is created. It is recommended to save a back copy of this .pbk file. If the licence directory is removed and then re-created, the .pbk no longer exists. So the .pbk file must be re-added for Infrastructure Management licensing to function properly. This file can be captured from a backup of the installation (if a backup exists) or from another computer where Infrastructure Management is installed.

pw license usage

The pw license usage command generates an XML file that contains server details and all features that are licensed for use. The syntax for this command is as follows:

pw license usage <email> <domain>

email is the customer contact email address. If you do not want to send an email, enter none.
domain is the server computer domain name. If there is no domain name, enter none.
