Administering Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool

The Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool utility is included with the Infrastructure Management installation, and is made up of tabbed pages that provide options for administering Infrastructure Management. You can use this utility to:

  • View installation and configuration log files
  • Locate and view other log files on your system
  • Zip and send files to BMC Customer Support
  • Run the post-installation health check
  • Set an encrypted password
  • Run the memory usage and disk space check
  • Update performance tuning parameters

The following topics describe how to start the utility and use the options available on each tabbed page:

Running the Maintenance Tool

You can run the Infrastructure Management Maintenance tool in a graphical user interface or from the command line.

To open the Infrastructure Management Maintenance tool in a graphical user interface

  • (Microsoft Windows): Navigate to the installationDirectory\utility folder, and run the TrueSightIMMaintenanceTool.cmd file.
  • (UNIX): Navigate to the installationDirectory/utility folder, and run the TrueSightIMMaintenanceTool.sh file.

To open the Infrastructure Management Maintenance tool from the command line

  • (Microsoft Windows): Navigate to the <installationDirectory>\utility folder, and run TrueSightIMMaintenanceTool.cmd with the -silent option.
  • (UNIX) Navigate to the <installationDirectory>/utility folder, and run TrueSightIMMaintenanceTool.sh with the -silent option.

Logs tab

You can use the Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool Logs tab to view installation and uninstallation log files, locate and view other log files, and zip log files to send to BMC Customer Support.

Perform the following procedure to view and zip log files:

  1. Start Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool.
    The application opens by default on the Logs tab. 
  2. Click Install Log to view the installation log file.


    You can perform the following actions for the log file:

    • Click one of the date tabs over the table to see events for the specified date.
    • Click a column heading to sort the table according to that parameter.
    • Select an item in the table to see details relative to the item appear in the area below the table.
    • Use the  and  buttons to search for or filter details.
    • Save the file with another name and type using the option from the File menu. 
  3. Click Uninstall Log or TrueSight Operations Management Log to view those files.
  4. Click Browse to Log to locate and view additional log files.
  5. Click Zip Logs to package TrueSight Operations Management log files for email or transfer to a technical support person. The resulting archive includes the Viewer logs, as well as the Infrastructure Management log files. After the process is complete, the location of the zipped files is displayed. It is stored in the Windows %TEMP% or UNIX and Linux /var/tmp or /tmp directories.
  6. Click Zip All Logs, to package log files for all BMC Software products installed on the computer, for email or transfer to a technical support person. After the process is complete, the location of the zipped files is displayed. By default the file is called is AllLogs-<computerName>.zip and is stored in the Windows %TEMP% or UNIX and Linux /var/tmp or /tmp directories.

Generating the options file to be used for another installation

Perform the following procedure to generate the options file from the first installation logs. This options file can be used for another regular or silent installation.

  1. Start Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool. The application opens by default on the Logs tab. 
  2. Click Install Log to view the installation log file.

  3. Select File > Save As to open the Save As window. 
  4. Select Project Options File from Save As Type.
  5. Enter the path where you want to save the options file in File Name.
  6. Click OK to generate the options file at the given path. 

Health Check tab

You can use the Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool Health Check tab to run a post-installation health check on your files.

Perform the following steps to run the health check:

  1. In the Infrastructure Management Maintenance tool, click the Health Check tab.
  2. Click Get Latest Status to get the latest server status.
  3. The progress screen displays the verification process of the post-installation checks. After the verification is complete, the Health Check Summary screen appears. This screen lists the check passed or check failed messages, based on the verification.

    Note

    If a check fails, you can make the required changes for that component, then click the Previous button to run the checks again.

  4. (Optional) Click the View Log button on the Health Check Summary screen to view the logs.
  5. Click Close to exit.

Configuration Check tab

You can use the Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool Configuration Check tab to run a post-installation system configuration check on your files. It includes memory usage and disk space check.

Perform the following steps to run the configuration check:

  1. In the Infrastructure Management Maintenance tool, click the Configuration Check tab. 
  2. Click Get Latest Status to get the latest memory status.
  3. The progress screen displays the verification process of the post-installation checks. After the verification is complete, the Memory Check Summary screen appears. This screen lists the check passed or check failed messages, based on the verification.

    Note

    If a check fails, you can make the required changes, then click the Previous button to run the checks again.

  4. It also displays the following:
    • Total Disk Space
    • Available Disk Space
    • Required Disk Space
    • Total Physical Memory
    • Available Physical Memory 
  5. Click Close to exit.

Encrypt tab

You can use the Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool Encrypt tab to create an encrypted password for Infrastructure Management silent installations. 

Perform the following steps to create an encrypted password using the Encrypt tab:

  1. Start Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool.
  2. Click the Encrypt tab.
  3. Type the desired password in the Password box.
  4. Type it again in the Confirm Password box.
  5. Click Encrypt.
    The encrypted password is displayed in the Encrypted Password box.
  6. Copy and paste the encrypted password in the Options.txt file.

Tune Parameters tab

You can use the Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool Tune Parameters tab to configure the performance tuning parameters. 

 Perform the following steps to configure the performance tuning parameters using the Tune Parameters tab:

  1. Start Infrastructure Management Maintenance Tool.
  2. Click the Tune Parameters tab.
  3. Click Tune Parameters if you want to tune server performance parameters after modifying the parameter values in the ServerPerformanceParameters.csv file located in the pw\custom\conf directory.
  4. When the performance tuning is completed, restart all the Infrastructure Management services.
