Getting started with solution administration in the TrueSight console

For customers who are upgrading to TrueSight Presentation Server, this getting started topic describes how solution administration differs from TrueSight Infrastructure Management. Solution Administrators should read this topic to understand how they can perform tasks differently in the TrueSight console.

Solution administration overview

The TrueSight console provides Solution Administrators with a consolidated interface for performing the following activities:

  • Connecting the Presentation Server to its data providers and integrating with other products
  • Setting up data collection and monitoring for IT Operations
  • Administering role-based access control to the data and monitoring features

For authentication of users and tenant management, Operations Management integrates out of the box with BMC Remedy Single Sign-on.

The TrueSight Presentation Server hosts the web-based TrueSight console functions and consumes data from various TrueSight products to provide a consolidated set of views for monitoring the infrastructure, real and synthetic applications, and capacity planning. In addition to data presentation, the TrueSight Presentation Server performs functions such as role-based access control and data management functions such as storage and persistence.

Data providers collect and process the information that enables IT Operations to monitor IT infrastructure and applications. The Presentation Server connects to these data providers:

  • BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management and BMC PATROL - Events, devices, and performance data
  • BMC TrueSight App Visibility Manager - Active application transactions and performance data
  • BMC Synthetic Transaction Execution Adapter Agent - Generated synthetic application transactions and performance data

Configuration of a data provider includes the following activities:

  • Connecting to the Presentation Server
  • Configuring the data provider's components, such as agents, collectors, and servers
  • Setting up data collection so you can feed that data to the Presentation Server

Remedy Single Sign-On (Remedy SSO) is an authentication system that enables users to enter their credentials only once for authenticating in a multi-software environment. Upon authentication, users automatically gain access to all applications that are integrated with Remedy SSO. In TrueSight Presentation Server, Remedy SSO supports only the following authentication types:

  • Local
  • SAMLv2


The Infrastructure Management administrator console and TrueOps mobile app does not support the SAMLv2 authentication type.

In TrueSight Presentation Server, Remedy SSO does not support the following authentication types:

  • Kerberos
  • CERT

Based on your organization's requirements, you can configure any of the authentication types to authenticate the users for TrueSight product components. To configure and use these authentication types you must do the following:

  • Install the Remedy Single Sign-On server and configure it with an authentication server such as LDAP/AD or SAMLv2.
  • Create the required tenants (realms), user groups, and users on the Remedy Single Sign-On Admin console.
  • Integrate the Remedy Single Sign-On server with the TrueSight Presentation Server during the TrueSight Presentation Server installation or upgrade.

Administrative consoles before and after upgrade

Before BMC TrueSight Presentation Server 10.0, administration of the monitoring systems was performed in the individual product consoles, as follows:

  • BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management - Administrators used the Central Monitoring Administration, hosted on an Infrastructure Management Server, to download BMC PATROL Agents and Knowledge Modules, download Integration Service hosts, create installation packages, and set up monitoring policies to collect events and performance data from monitored systems.
  • BMC Application Diagnostics - Administrators used the BMC Application Performance Management Console to configure the portal, collectors, and agents, and to set up data collection and SLA rules.
  • BMC Synthetic Monitoring - Administrators used the BMC Application Performance Management Console to configure the BMC Synthetic TEA Agent and set up execution plans and scripts to generate synthetic transactions.
  • Authentication and access control were handled through mechanisms specific to the monitoring systems' architecture and consoles.


Starting from the TrueSight Presentation Server 10.5 release, the Central Monitoring Administration features and functionalities have been made available under the TrueSight console. However, to access those functionalities, the TrueSight Infrastructure Management must be added as a component and the repositories must be imported. After upgrading to TrueSight Operations Management, Solution Administrators will use the TrueSight console for system configuration, data provider configuration, and role-based access control. Security administrators or Solution Administrators will use the Remedy SSO console to define users and tenants.


You still need the Infrastructure Management administrator console to configure events and adapters. For further information, see Infrastructure Management administrator console. However, for accessing all other monitoring features and functionalities it is recommended to use the TrueSight console.

Remedy Single Sign-On provides the user account and tenant management capabilities to the TrueSight Presentation Server. Solution Administrators create users, user groups, and tenants as realms in the Remedy SSO Admin Console. User Groups are then assigned to Authorization Profiles in the TrueSight console. For more information, see Configuring user authentication for the Presentation Server in Remedy SSO.

The TrueSight console provides role-based access control to data, system features, and features enabled by the data providers. Solution Administrators define roles and authorization profiles that control data access and the users' ability to perform functions. For more information, see Managing users and access control.

The initial configuration of the Presentation Server occurs during installation. The TrueSight console provides the following common features for enabling IT Operations to monitor your IT infrastructure and critical applications:

  • Dashboards - All users can configure dashboards; however, Solution Administrators or specialists need first to configure the data providers and set up data collection.
  • Application models - All data providers can leverage applications models to enable monitoring in an application context. For more detailed information, see Application models .
  • Groups - Groups help organize the information that you want to monitor. Groups created by using the TrueSight console are not specific to any Infrastructure Management server and are available only in the TrueSight console.
