Configuring Solaris OS in the PATROL console

The following topics describe the procedures that you must complete before you can begin using PATROL for Solaris in the PATROL Console. 

In PATROL console, menu commands (KM commands) are options to configure the knowledge module and discover the components. Right-click an object to access its menu commands. When a Knowledge Module (KM) is loaded, its associated menu commands are added to the KM area of a menu. The KM area is below the horizontal line on the menu. Menu commands above the line belong to the PATROL Console. The KM commands for the following application classes are added to the menus below the horizontal line:

To configure PATROL for Solaris to use a different Java home directory

  1. Navigate to the Oracle VM Managers node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the RHEV Manager node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Configure JAVA_HOME option to display the Configure JAVA_HOME dialog box.
  4. In the Specify JAVA_HOME field, enter the complete path to the Java home directory. 
    For example, if your Java executable exists in the /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_71/jre/bin/java path, specify /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_71/jre as the value of this field.
  5. Click Apply to save the configuration.

  6. Restart the PATROL Agent to apply the configuration.

To configure Oracle VM Manager monitoring 

After you install PATROL for Solaris, you must add an Oracle VM Manager to start the monitoring. 

  1. Navigate to the Oracle VM Managers node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Oracle VM Managers node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers option to display the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers dialog box.
  4. You can perform the following actions using this dialog box:
    1. Add an Oracle VM Manager for monitoring
    2. Modify the existing Oracle VM Manager configuration
    3. Delete the Oracle VM Manager configuration

Adding an Oracle VM Manager for monitoring 

  1. Navigate to the Oracle VM Managers node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Oracle VM Managers node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers option to display the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers dialog box.
  4. Select the Add Oracle VM Manager option and click OK.
    The Add Oracle VM Manager dialog box is displayed.
  5. In the Hostname field, enter the name of the 

Modifying an existing Oracle VM Manager configuration 

  1. Navigate to the Oracle VM Managers node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Oracle VM Managers node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers option to display the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers dialog box.
  4. Select an existing Oracle VM Manager option and select the Modify Oracle VM Manager option. Click OK.
  5. Edit the fields as required.

    Note

    You must enter the password again.

  6. Click Ok.
    The configuration of the selected host is modified.

Removing an Oracle VM Manager 

  1. Navigate to the Oracle VM Managers node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Oracle VM Managers node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers option to display the Manage List of Oracle VM Managers dialog box.
  4. Select an existing Oracle VM Manager option and select the Delete Oracle VM Manager option. Click OK.

  5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

The selected Oracle VM Manager will be deleted from the console and configuration information will be deleted.

To configure remote monitoring of Solaris host

After you install PATROL for Solaris, you must configure a Solaris host to start the monitoring. 

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Add Host option to display the Add Host dialog box.
  4. You can perform the following actions using this dialog box:
    1. Add a host for monitoring
    2. Modify the configuration of an existing host 
    3. Delete the host configuration

Adding a Solaris host for monitoring 

This task provides information about how to add a new host for monitoring. You can log on to a remote host in one the following ways:

  • Password-based authentication: You need to enter user name and password.
  • Key-based authentication: You need to enter user name, public and private key file paths, and passphrase.

User name/password or user name /public and private key file paths and passphrase must be entered if your profile is set to NONE or if you have selected the Override Profile Credentials (for profile other than NONE) option.

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Monitored Hosts option to display the Manage List of Monitored Hosts dialog box.
  4. Select the Add Host option and click Ok. 
    The Add Host dialog box is displayed.
    1. In the Hostname field, enter the name of the host.
    2. Enter the port number. The default port number is 22.
    3. Select a profile from the Profile list. If you select a profile other than NONE, you don't need enter credentials.
    4. Select Override Profile Credentials (for profile other than NONE) if you want to override the default profile credentials.
    5. Type the user name to log on to the remote host.
    6. Type the password.
    7. Type the paths in the Public Key File Path and Private Key File Path fields if you are using key-based authentication.
    8. Type the passphrase to access the public key and private key files if you are using key-based authentication.
    9. Click Add.

A new host will be added for remote monitoring.

Modifying an existing Solaris host configuration 

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Monitored Hosts option to display the Manage List of Monitored Hosts dialog box.
  4. Select an existing host option and select the Modify Host option. Click OK.

  5. Edit the fields as required.

    Note

    You must enter the password again.

  6. Click Ok.
    The configuration of the selected host is modified.

Removing a Solaris host from monitoring 

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage List of Monitored Hosts option to display the Manage List of Monitored Hosts dialog box.
  4. Select an existing host option and select the Delete Host option. Click OK.

  5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

The selected Solaris host will be deleted from the console and configuration information will be deleted.

To configure user profiles 

You can create profiles so that hosts can be assigned to these profiles.

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. From the menu, select the Manage User Profiles option to display the Manage Profile dialog box.
  4. You can perform the following actions using this dialog box:
    1. Add a new profile
    2. Modify an existing profile
    3. Delete a profile

Adding a new user profile 

  1. Access the Solaris host application menu as described in To configure user profiles
  2. Select Manage User Profiles from the Solaris Host menu. The Manage Profile dialog box is displayed.
  3. Select Add New Profile and click OK. The Add New Profile dialog box is displayed.
  4. Type the name of the profile in the Profile Name field.
  5. Type the username in the Username field.
  6. Type the password in the Password field, and click OK.

A new profile will be added.

Modifying an existing user profile 

  1. Access the Solaris host application menu as described in To configure user profiles.
  2. Select Manage User Profiles from the Solaris Host menu. The Manage Profile dialog box is displayed.
  3. Select an existing profile and select the Modify Profile option. Click OK.
  4. Edit the fields as required.

The selected profile will be modified.

Deleting an existing user profile 

  1. Access the Solaris host application menu as described in To configure user profiles.
  2. Select Manage User Profiles from the Solaris Host menu. The Manage Profile dialog box is displayed.
  3. Select an existing profile and select the Delete Profile option. Click OK.
  4. Click Yes. 

The selected profile will be deleted from the PATROL Agent configuration and all the host instances will be deleted from the console and configuration information for each host will be deleted from the PATROL Agent configuration.

Listing connected hosts

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. Select List of Conneted Hosts option. The KM displays the report in the system output window (SOW) similar to the following.

Listing disconnected hosts

  1. Navigate to the Solaris Hosts node below the PATROLMainMap tree.
  2. Access the Solaris Hosts node menu.

  3. Select List of Disconneted Hosts option. The KM displays the report in the system output window (SOW) similar to the following.

    Unless I'm mistaken - with regards to key-based authentication, there is no detail on the PATROL for Solaris documentation, as to what format you expect the public & private key files to be in. As in, should they be OpenSSH format, or will keys generated via Puttygen work? Having configured an infrastructure policy for key-based remote monitoring this afternoon, keys generated with Puttygen do not work, only OpenSSH ones do. You should probably include detail to this effect in your documentation.
