Configuring URL monitoring

After you have installed the PATROL for Internet Server, you must configure a monitoring policy. You can use the information in this topic to configure internet server monitor type in TrueSight console.

Before you begin

You must download and install the Internet Server KM.

To configure the URL monitor type

  1. To configure the KM, set the following preferences on the Add Monitoring Configuration dialog:

  2. In the Global administration settings window, enter the following details:

LoggingEnable Logging for all of the configured PATROL Agent environments to confirm that all of the PATROL for Internet Server environments are correctly configured.
Enable device mapping

By default, when device mapping is enabled, all monitored Internet Server instances are displayed as a device on the Monitoring > Devices page. When device mapping is disabled, monitored information is shown under PATROL Agent. It saves you extra clicks to navigate the PATROL Agent hierarchy while viewing monitoring results.

Clear this check box to disable device mapping.

Note

If you modify this setting after KM discovery, restart the PATROL Agent to apply the changes.

Import Certificate
Certificate Format

Select one of the following certificate formats from the drop-down menu:    

  • PKCS#12 / PEM 
  • PKCS#12- Also known as PFX, it serves as a standard format for securely storing private keys and certificates.
  • PEM - PEM file is a common format for X.509 certificates, CSRs, and cryptographic keys. It may include an end-entity certificate, a private key, or a series of certificates creating a seamless chain of trust.
Certificate File PathEnter the location of the certificate file.
Certificate PasswordEnter the password to access the certificate.
Certificate nickname (applicable for Base 64 encoded certificates)Enter the certificate nickname, if applicable.

Server configuration

Click Add and enter the URL configuration details.

Field

Description

URL address

Enter the complete URL you want to monitor in the http://<Host>:<PORT>/<URL> orhttps://<Host>:<PORT>/<URL> format. 
Port 80 for HTTP and port 443 for https is monitored by default, if no port is entered. HTTP is the default protocol.

URL display Name

Enter a unique name that identifies the URL that you want to monitor in the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Operation console. For better tracking, the label should be named in the device_port_urlName format.

HTTP request method type

Select the HTTP method type you want to use for the URL from the following:

  • GET
  • HEAD
  • POST

HTTP encoding

Choose one of the HTML character sets supported by the agent.

  • Web Server default - The response will be encoded by the Web Server encoding without any encoding from the KM.
  • iso88591 (Western Alphabet)

HTTP request timeout (sec)

Specify the HTTP timeout request in seconds. If there is no response retrieved before the specified timeout time, an alert will be generated for attribute Page (URL) availability status.

Sometimes a server request might take more than 30 seconds to respond. To avoid a timeout error, increase the timeout value.

Follow web server redirects

Select this check box to enable the monitoring for the redirected URL. When the configured URL is being redirected to another URL, enabling this setting ensures that the configured URL will automatically redirect to another URL.

HTTP response code check

OK status code ranges

Specify the range of the status code to set the attribute Content status of the URL to OK. Ranges can be specified in a comma separated list.

Warning status code ranges

Specify the range of status code to set the attribute Content status of the URL to WARNING. Ranges can be specified in a comma separated list.

Note

  • All other status codes that are not configured as OK or Warning including an empty status code will set the attribute Content status of the URL to ALARM.

NTLM/basic authentication

User name

Enter the URL username to be used for authentication. Leave blank if URL authentication is not required.

Password

Enter the URL password.

Note

A server that requires authentication sends back a 401 response code and an associated WWW-Authenticate:header that lists all the authentication methods that the server supports.

HTTP response content check

Contains the string - single line

Enter the string expression that needs to be verified.

Contains the string - multiline (enter complete file path)Enter the complete file path which contains single or multiline string expression to be verified.
Case sensitiveSelect this option to enable case sensitive verification of the configured string expression.
Regular expression stringSelect this option to enable a regular expression search criteria. The PATROL Agent's regular expression method is used.
HTTP response check condition

Select the HTTP response check condition to set an alarm for the following conditions:

  • Do not match
  • Match

If Match condition is selected and the string content matches the entered string, the KM will generate an alarm.

HTTP request cookie


HTTP cookie

Enter the cookie name and value that will be sent with the URL you want to monitor.

HTTP request referer address


HTTP referrer

Enter the fully qualified path to the referrer to the URL of a page to be monitored.

HTTP request user agent


User Agent

Enter the name that identifies the user agent. PATROL is the default user agent.

Proxy settings

Field

Description

Proxy host name/IP address

Enter a valid proxy Host name.

Port

Enter the proxy port number.

Proxy connection protocol

Select one of the following protocols:

  • HTTP
  • HTTPS

Proxy Username

Enter the proxy server username. If proxy server authentication is not required, leave it blank.

Proxy Password

Enter proxy server password.

You can modify the host, port, and the URL specified. You cannot modify the protocol specified. If you enter an incorrect protocol, delete it and type it again.

After adding all the relevant URLs you want to monitor, click the OK and Close button to save the configuration.

In case if something goes wrong with the configuration of the URL, you can use the system commands to verify the URL. The following commands can help you:

  • Linux : >>wget -vd <some url>. This command shows response&request messages including a response code" 
  • Solaris>>/usr/sfw/bin/wget -vd <some url>
  • Windows/AIX: >>ping <some url>

These commands are used to verify that the system that you are using can communicate over the network with another system or network device.

Field

Description

URL  

Type the URL you want to monitor in the http://<Host>:<PORT>/<URL> orhttps://<Host>:<PORT>/<URL> format.

Choose one of the HTML character sets supported by the user agent.

Timeout

The time required by the URL to respond to requests.

HTTPS Response Code

HTTP Response Code indicate the OK Status code ranges and WARNING status code ranges for the URL you want to monitor.

Authentication

Enter the Username and Password associated with the URL.

Content Check

Enter the content check criteria using one or more than one of the following:

  • Single line content expression
  • Multi Line content expression file
  • Case sensitive match
  • Evaluate Unix-style regular expressions
  • Content check operation

Cookie

Enter the cookie name and value that will be sent with the URL you want to monitor.

Referrer

Enter the fully qualified path to the referrer to the URL of a page to be monitored.

User Agent

Enter the name that identifies the user agent. PATROL is the default user agent.

Link Check

Perform the following steps to configure link checks:

  • Check Enable Link Checking for this URL to enable linking checking for the URL.
  • Set the time interval between each link check request.
  • Enter the number of levels of links to be checked in the Link check depth field.
  • Enter the maximum number of links you want to check in the Maximum number of links to check field.
  • Enter the maximum hours and minutes to run the line check operation in theMaximum run time field.
  • Enter the hours and minutes between each link check operation in the Run frequency field.
  • In the First run time field, enter the time in HH:MM:SS when the link check operation will run.

HTTP From Fields


Field Name

Enter the name, address, or account number associated with the form fields for the URL you want to monitor.

Field Value

Enter the field value associated with the form fields for the URL monitored.

Field Encrypted Value

Enter the filed encrypted value. The value you enter will not be visible on the screen.

Add to List

Click this button to add the HTTP From Fields to the list of HTTP From Fields.

Modify Selection

Click this button to save the changes made to the HTTP From Field already added.

Remove from List

Click this button to remove the added HTTP From Field from the list of HTTP From Fields

  • To add the URL you want to monitor to the List - URL Monitoring, click Add to List button.
  • To save the changes made to the URL already saved, click Modify Selection button.
  • To remove a selected URL from the list of URL monitored, click Remove from List button.

Note

You can modify the host, port, and the URL specified. You cannot modify the protocol specified. If you enter an incorrect protocol, delete it and type it again.

After adding all the relevant URLs you want to monitor, click the Close button to save the configuration.
