Configuring internet servers monitoring

After you have installed the PATROL for Internet Server, you must configure a monitoring policy. You can use the information in this topic to configure internet server monitor type in TrueSight console.

Before you begin

You must download and install the Internet Server KM.

To configure the Internet Server monitor type

In the Add Monitoring Configuration panel, select the following parameters for the Internet Server KM:

Global administration settings

FieldDescription
2-way SSL database passwordSpecify the database password which is used to store the client certificate. The default value is changeme.
LoggingEnable Logging for all of the configured PATROL Agent environments to confirm that all of the PATROL for Internet Server environments are correctly configured.

Server configuration

Click Add and enter the Server configuration details.

Field

Description

Host name/IP address

Enter the FQDN or IP address of the server you want to monitor.

If you want to use the host name of the PATROL Agent, use $HOSTNAME.

Forced IP address

(Optional) Enter the IP address of the host you want to monitor.

You can leave this field blank if you have provided the actual host name or IP address in the Host name/IP address field.

Dynamic IP address

Select this option to search for a dynamic host for each added server. 

Protocol

Select one from the following versions of Internet Protocol (IP)

  • IPv4
  • IPv6

Proxy settings

Field

Description

Proxy host name/IP address

Enter a valid Host name.

Port

Enter the proxy port number.

Proxy connection protocol

Select one of the following protocols:

  • HTTP
  • HTTPS

Proxy Username

Enter the proxy server username. If proxy server authentication is not required, leave it blank.

Proxy Password

Enter proxy server password.

Port and log monitoring settings

Port numberEnter the port number which is different from the default ports are 80/443.
Web Server log monitoring settings
Web Server root path

Specify the Web Server root path.

For example, Unix Apache: /usr/local/apache2/

Windows Apache: C:\Program File (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2

Windows IIS: C:\inetpub

Web Server access log path

Specify the Web Server access log path for Apache Web Server which correlates the configured Web Server root path.

For example: logs/access_log.

For IIS Web Server, specify full path and file extension.

For example: C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles\W3SVC1\*.log

Apache Web Server error log path

Specify the valid which correlates the configured Web Server root path.

For example: logs/error_log

Advanced
Log format

Select the log format:

  • Common Log Format - CLF
  • Common Log Format - CLF with Referrer and Agent
  • W3C Extended Log File Format
Limit log entries process rateSelect this option to limit the number of log entries that can be processed every collection cycle.
Maximum log entries process rateEnter the maximum log entries that can be processed every collection cycle. It is applicable only when Limit log entries process rate is enabled.
Resolve client IP to addressSelect this option to enable resolve client IP to address.

Advance settings

Select this option to disable data collection for the configured settings.

Monitor Apache Server virtual host statisticsSelect this option to monitor Apache Server virtual host statistics.

After adding all relevant hosts, click OK and Close button and save the Policy.

Field

Description

Host

Enter a valid host name.

Type

Select one from the following type of the servers

  • Local
  • Remote: file-system available
  • Remote: file-system unavailable

Dynamic IP address

Select the check-box to search for a dynamic host for each added server. 

IP Type

Select one from the following versions of Internet Protocol (IP)

  • IPv4
  • IPv6

Servers

Select one or more of the following server types. By default, Web Server is selected.

  • DNS Server
  • FTP Server
  • IMAP Server
  • LDAP Server
  • Mail Server
  • News Server
  • POP3 Server
  • Proxy Server
  • Web Server

Apply non-default settings to this server 

(Applicable to Web Server only)

Enable to apply custom configuration to web or secured web servers during discovery. 

Configure Inactive

Select this check box to configure Internet Servers, while the data collection remain inactive.

Enable Virtual Host Statistics


(Applicable to Apache based Web Servers only)

Select this check box to enable/disable monitoring the server status of the virtual hosts.

Proxy

The details of the proxy server used to connect to the host.

Protocol

Select one of the following protocols:

  • HTTP
  • HTTPS

Host

Enter a valid Host name.

Port

Enter the proxy port number.

Username

Enter a valid username.

Password

Enter a valid password.

Custom ports and Advance settings

Port

Specify the additional port number.

Server Root Path

Specify the Web Server root directory.

Example:

    • (UNIX/usr/local/apache2
    • (WindowsC:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2
    • (IISC:\inetpub\
Access LogSpecify the access log path, relative to the root server directory. For example,logs/access_log. For IIS, enter the full path and file extension.

Error Log

(Applicable only to Apache Web servers)

Specify the error log path, relative to the root server directory. For example,logs/error_log.
Access Log Format

Select from one of the following Access Log formats:

  • Common Log Format - CLF
  • Common Log Format - CLF with Referrer and Agent
  • W3C Extended Log File Format
Max Samples per minuteSpecify the maximum number of sample rate per minute. By default, 5000 maximum samples are specified.
Limit Sample RateSelect this check box to set a limit to sample rate.
Resolve client IP addressSelect this check box to enable resolving the client Internet Protocol (IP) address.
  • To add the internet server to the list, click Add to List button.
  • To save the changes made to the server already added, click Modify Selection button.
  • To remove the selected server from monitoring, click Remove from List, button.

After adding all the hosts, enter the following details in the Administration section:

Java Home Location

Specify the location of the Java Home directory.

For example:

(UNIX/usr/local/java8

(WindowsC:\Program Files\Java\jre8

Key Store PasswordSpecify the Agent SSL Database password. By default, "changeme" is the password specified.
Enable debugSelect or clear this check box to enable or disable debugging. The debug log files are available at PATROL_HOME\log directory.


After adding all relevant hosts, click the 
Close button. Then click the Save button in the Add Policy dialog box.
