Configuring BIND DNS servers

You can use BMC PATROL for Internet Servers to monitor all types of DNS servers to ensure availability and response time. There are certain additional capabilities available to you when monitoring BIND DNS servers on Unix systems. In these cases, BMC PATROL for Internet Servers will report statistical data for clients that use your DNS server. BMC PATROL for Internet Servers reports request rates that you can use to predict when you might encounter bottlenecks on your system. You can use this data to decide when to add additional DNS servers into your environment.

To configure BIND DNS servers

  1. Hold down MB3 on your Domain_Name_Server icon, and select PATROL Admin > Configure > Local. A dialog box is displayed:

    Configuring a BIND DNS Server
  2. To configure the advanced DNS settings for BIND DNS servers, enter information in the following three fields:
    • Collect BIND Server Statistics. Select this option to enable BMC PATROL for Internet Servers to gather statistical data. If you do not select this option, the consumer parameters reporting this usage data will not appear in your Console.
    • BIND Stats File. Enter the location of your BIND statistics file (also known as a scoreboard file). Consult your BIND documentation if you are not sure of the location. In most cases, use the default location.
    • BIND Version. Select the BIND server version: 4.x, 8.x, or 9.x.
