Monitoring the application disk space

A search engine makes heavy use of storage devices, and watching the disk space ensures that this basic need gets fulfilled. When using Elasticsearch, it is important to know if the server is making use of all the memory.

The metrics listed here will help you to check if the Elasticsearch application requires more disk space.

Available disk space (Cluster)

Available disk space helps us understand if the available disk space is sufficient on all the nodes across the Cluster. A low disk space indicates that you might soon run out of disk space resulting in unsuccessful insert or update operations. Depending on the disk space percentage, one or more nodes might stop responding in such scenarios. For more information about this attribute, see Available disk space attribute page.

Set threshold on this attribute to get notified about the available disk space across all nodes in percent. Consider setting up an alert to trigger if the disk space is less than 20 percent. The KM generates an alarm and triggers an event when the threshold values are met.

Suggested action

The KM event indicates that you might want to check the disk space across all the nodes of the Cluster.

Available disk space (Node)

Available disk space helps us understand if the available disk space is sufficient on the filesystem that is running Elasticsearch. A low disk space indicates that you might soon run out of disk space resulting in unsuccessful insert or update operations. The node might stop responding in such scenarios. For more information about this attribute, see Available disk space attribute page.

Set threshold on this attribute to get notified about the available disk space of the filesystem in percent. Consider setting up an alert to trigger if the disk space is less than 20 percent. The KM generates an alarm and triggers an event when the threshold values are met.

Suggested action

The KM event indicates that you might want to check the disk space of the filesystem that is running the Elasticsearch service.

Where to go from here

Using the TrueSight console, you can adjust the thresholds ranges for these monitoring attributes with the Agent Threshold tab in the Infrastructure Policies page. For more information see, Defining a monitoring policy.
