Partition Type (PartitionType)

This parameter displays the type of AIX partition that is managed by the AIX VIRTUALIZATION. With the introduction of AIX version 5.3, three types of logical partitions can be implemented on servers built on the POWER5 architecture (p5) - this parameter indicates the type of AIX partition with possible values: LPAR (dedicated processors assigned to AIX logical partition), DLPAR (dynamic logical partition), and SPLPAR (AIX systems running in shared processor logical partitioned mode on IBM p5 servers with micropartitioning). In LPAR, individual processor, memory and I/O adapter slot resources are monitored under the exclusive control of a logical partition. For any change in LPARs resource allocation to be effective, the partition should be rebooted.

Dynamic LPAR allows fine-grained resource allocation and deallocation while activating a logical partition, and also when the partitions are running. In DLPAR, individual processors, memory regions and I/O adapter slots are released and acquired from a "free pool", or moved directly from one partition to another.

In SPLPAR, the processor capacity is specified in processing units; one processing unit represents one percent of one physical processor. Shared processors forms partition using micropartitioning technology; the minimum capacity is 10 processing units, or 1/10 of a physical processor. SPLPARs are defined with capped and uncapped attributes. A capped SPLPAR is not allowed to exceed the defined capacity. An uncapped SPLPAR, however, is allowed to consume additional capacity.
