Creating custom fields for a CI class object

When you create a configuration item, you can use custom fields to record information about the configuration item that is not available in the out-of-the-box attributes. This section is valid only for users of CMDB 1.0. You are using CMDB 1.0 if you have upgraded to 20.14.01 or later but have not upgraded to CMDB 2.0.

To create custom fields for a CI class object

  1. Click the Remedyforce Administration tab.
  2. On the Home page, click Manage Objects tile, and from the menu, select Create and Edit Objects.
  3. From the Object list, select All Custom Objects.
  4. Click the appropriate <custom object name>.
  5. In the Custom Fields & Relationships section, click New.
  6. Select the data type for the custom field.

  7. Click Next.
  8. On Enter the details page, type label in the Field Label field, and name in the Field Name field for the custom field.

  9. Based on the data type, enter attributes of the custom field.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Select the profiles that require editing access to this custom field.
  12. Click Next.
By default, the custom field is selected for page layout of the custom object.
  13. Select the page layouts that display the custom field as an editable field.Click Save.

Note

  • Custom fields of the Lookup Relationship data type are not shown on the Custom tab of the Instance Editor.
  • When you create or edit the fields for a custom object, note that the Time BETA data type is not supported currently.
  • It is not recommended to add the Text(Encrypted) data type field to the Column Headers field set of an object as it could inadvertently expose sensitive data.

  • For more information about creating custom fields, see the Salesforce Help.

Best Practice

When you add a field to an object, ensure that the Field Name field is unique and does not match any out-of-the-box field names in that object. BMC recommends that you add a prefix or suffix to the Field Name field to avoid any conflicts. If an out-of-the-box field and a custom field have same field names, you might encounter issues while using these fields in BMC Remedyforce. However, more than one fields can have same Field Label.

For example, if you add a custom field in the Incident object, you can specify the Field Label as Category, but you must ensure that the value in the Field Name field is not FKCategory__c.
