Resizing the BMC Helix Service Management deployment

You can resize BMC Helix Service Management deployment to facilitate scaling up and down of your environment. Resize your  BMC Helix Service Management by changing the deployment size. You can increase or decrease the deployment size.

Scenario

Apex Global uses BMC Helix Service Management in a Compact deployment size and want to expand the size to manage additional user load. A larger deployment size provides more pod replicas and users. A system administrator in Apex Global verifies the number of pod replicas and users supported with the deployment sizes, Small, Medium, and Large. The system administrator analyzes that the Medium deployment size meets your user load requirements, and then changes the deployment size to Medium by re-running the deployment pipelines.

Before you begin

If you are increasing the deployment size, make sure that you meet the additional resource requirements.

If you are decreasing the deployment size, make sure that you verify the deployment size specifications.

See Sizing-and-scalability-considerations.

To resize the deployment

  1. Log in to your Jenkins server by using the following URL:
    http://<Jenkins server host name>:8080
  2. Select the HELIX_ONPREM_DEPLOYMENT pipeline, select the latest build, and then click Rebuild.
  3. In the CUSTOMER-INFO section, specify the following parameters:

    Parameter

    Description

    CUSTOMER_SIZE

Specify the deployment size that you need for resizing your deployment. Enter the value as C, S, M, L, or XL.

For example, enter the value as M if you want to resize your deployment from Compact to Medium.
For information about the pod replicas and users supported with the deployment sizes, see Sizing-and-scalability-considerations.

    DEPLOYMENT_MODE

    Specify the value as SERVICE.

  4. In the PRODUCT-DEPLOY section, select the HELIX_GENERATE_CONFIG, HELIX_PLATFORM_DEPLOY, HELIX_NONPLATFORM_DEPLOY, and HELIX_SMARTAPPS_DEPLOY parameters.
  5. Click Rebuild.

Important

After you resize your deployment, the platform and application component pods are restarted. There is no downtime, and the pods are restarted in rolling restart mode.
