Defining parameters for running migration jobs
Migration parameters are used to prompt users for data when running a data migration. You can prompt for the following types of data:
Parameter type | Description |
---|---|
Dynamic Menu | Allows the selection of one value from a list of data obtained from the BMC Helix ITSM system. For example, a list of ITSM Companies from the COM:Company form. This data is populated on demand from the administration interface. |
Static Menu | Allows the selection of one value from a list of data manually defined in BMC Helix Data Manager. |
Date Range | Allows the selection of a start and end date range. |
Qualification | Allows any AR System qualification to be entered. |
You can attach migration parameters to any node in the tree, and the tree will automatically filter data from that node. The most common use of a migration parameter is to filter the list of companies included in a migration by attaching a Company dynamic menu to the root node COM:Company.
To configure migration parameters
- From the navigation bar, select Data Migration > Migration Parameters.
- To view the details of a migration parameter, select it from the list at the top of the page.
The details for the migration parameter are displayed. To configure the parameter, click the Edit icon, and make the necessary changes.
You can register the following information for a migration parameter:Field
Description
Parameter Name
The unique name for the migration parameter.
Type
The following options are available:
- Menu—Allows the user to select from a list of values.
- Date Range—Allows the user to select a start and end date range.
- Qualification—Defines a static qualification or allows a user to enter a qualification.
- Multiple Select Menu —Not supported.
Menu Type
Available when the Type is Menu. The options are:
- Dynamic—The menu data can be extracted from one or more BMC Helix ITSM systems. This extraction is not automatic and must be manually triggered by the BMC Helix Data Manager administrator.
- Static—The menu data is created within BMC Helix Data Manager.
Prompt Type
This setting indicates whether the user is prompted for the value or if the parameter value is fixed.
When the Type is Qualification, you can select only Static.
Label
The name of the parameter as it will be presented when creating a migration job.
This field is available only available if Prompt Type is Prompt.
Sample Data Dictionary
For qualification and menu parameters, this setting allows you to select the Data Dictionary that will be used to provide the list of forms and fields for qualifications and data population.
Form Name
For menu parameters, this field controls the form name from which the menu data will be extracted. For qualification parameters, this controls the form against which the qualification is created.
Value Field
Only used for menu parameters. This indicates the field that holds the data value that will be passed into the migration job.
You can select from a list of all data fields on the selected form. You can filter the list by Field Name, Field ID, or Type by using the column headers.
Display Field
Used only for menu parameters. This field indicates the field that holds the data value that will be displayed to the user selecting the field value. This allows a different value to be presented to the end user and passed into the migration job.
Qualification
For menu parameters, this value in this field represents the qualification used to extract data from the BMC Helix ITSM systems. For qualification parameters, this qualification represents the default qualification that will be used to filter data in any form to which the parameter is attached.
Populating migration job menu items
Dynamic menus enable you to populate the data using data from one or more BMC Helix ITSM systems. This extraction is not automatic. The BMC Helix Data Manager administrator must manually trigger the extraction.
The set of menu data displayed when creating a migration job is selected depending on the BMC Helix ITSM system from which the export is being performed. For example, three customers are on System A, and two are on System B:
System A | System B |
---|---|
|
|
This menu can be populated with data from System A and System B. When performing a data migration starting with an export from System A, the engineer sees the list of companies from System A only. When performing a data migration starting with an export from System B, the engineer sees the list of companies from System B only.
To populate menu data, you must first link the BMC Helix ITSM systems.
To link BMC Helix ITSM systems
- Select the Data Source Systems tab.
- To add the systems for which you want to add data, click the Remedy System menu and click Add.
- To remove a linked BMC Helix ITSM system, select the system name from the list on the left and click Remove.
To initiate data population
- To commence the population of menu data, click Populate Data.
The progress of the data extraction is shown in a dialog box as shown in the example below.
When the data extraction has completed successfully, the menu data appears on the Menu Data tab.
You can add, modify, or remove any of the data populated from the BMC Helix ITSM systems. - To see the data for a system, click the Data Source Systems tab, and select the system.
