Preparing the infrastructure for consolidation

Depending on the type of consolidation being performed and the existing architecture available, several activities might be required to set up and configure the infrastructure to support the consolidation project. This may be limited to setting up the data migration architecture or might also include creating a new production architecture that will be used as the target system for consolidation.

This topic describes the high-level process for creating a general architecture and setting up the systems for data migration by using BMC Helix Data Manager. The specific architecture required for your upgrade will differ according to a range factors like number, location, and types of users; integrations; and non-functional requirements such as failover and robustness. Contact BMC Support to discuss any aspect of the architecture required to support BMC Helix Data Manager.

The following steps describe the suggested high-level process for creating the infrastructure for the new production environment. It is assumed that all servers in the architecture are virtual machines. Contact BMC support to discuss how this process is impacted by using physical servers.

Task 1—Set up the infrastructure

  1. Deploy any new physical infrastructure.
  2. Set up network and load balancers.
  3. Set up database servers.

Task 2—Perform the initial installation

  1. Perform the AR System and ITSM installation on a single AR System server. Follow the best practice for performing the upgrade including:
    • Download the latest installers.
    • Complete checklists as per BMC documentation.
    • Review the compatibility matrix.
    • Back up the OS (VM snapshot) and database before each component is installed.
  2. Back up the database. This backup is the baseline installation backup.
Perform this step is only once when creating the first system. For each subsequent system, restore the baseline installation backup and proceed to step 3.

Task 3—Build or deploy servers

Option A—Deploy standard VM images and configure.

  • Deploy the remaining components of the application by using your standard VM images.
  • Drop and recreate the manually installed AR System server and replace it with a consistent image.

Option B—Install and configure all AR System and mid tier servers manually.

  • You do not have standard VM images.
  • Install and configure each AR System server with all of the AR System and ITSM components.
  • Install and configure each mid tier server.
