Registering a system for BMC Helix ITSM
- Open the System page by completing one of the following steps:
- If you are on the Help tab and registering your initial system, select Migrate Data in the list, and then click Register Systems.
- If you are registering an additional system, select Configuration > Register & Configure Systems.
- Click Create.
- From the Type list, select Remedy.
- Select Enabled for Data Migration.
- Enter the information as per the table given in the section To set the field parameters.
Repeat the steps 1 to 5 to register source and target systems.
The following images show example of registered source and target systems for on-premise to on-premise migration:

To set the field parameters
Enter the following information to set the field parameters when registering a source or target system:
Field | Description |
---|---|
Display Name | The name of the server as it will be displayed in BMC Helix Data Manager. This is a descriptive name and does not need to match the network address. |
Environment | The name of the environment that this BMC Helix ITSM system is part of. |
Location | The location of the database. Options are:
|
ARS Version | The AR System version. This choice affects the way in which BMC Helix Data Manager interacts with the AR System data dictionary. Subtle differences in the underlying AR System data dictionary hold the metadata for an AR System application between versions. This value is important for application discovery to run correctly. |
System Type | The type of system. This is for display purposes only and does not affect the behavior of BMC Helix Data Manager when interacting with this system. Options are:
|
API | Select this option if you want to enable AR System API connections to this BMC Helix ITSM server. This API is used to build AR System workflows and not for any other operation. You must provide an AR System Administrator user and password to successfully build the workflow. You cannot register a user without a password. If you select the API option, the Remedy API tab appears next to the Database tab. Complete these fields as described in step 7. |
To set the database for local location
If you select Local for the Location field, complete the following fields on the Database tab:
Field | Description | |
Database Type | The type of database that is hosting the system. The options are:
Depending on the option you select, the fields will change on the tab. | |
Network Address | The network address for the database server hosting Remedy. BMC Helix Data Manager Engine must be able to resolve this address. The BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench never directly accesses the Remedy server. | |
Port | The port on which the BMC Helix ITSM database server is listening for incoming SQL connections. | |
Use Windows Authentication | If selected, BMC Helix Data Manager uses Window Authentication. | |
Enabled for Data Migration | If selected, the system is enabled for migrating data, and depending on the database type you selected, one of the following fields appear:
| |
MS SQL | Instance Name | The name of the database Microsoft SQL instance name. The name can be the name of the physical machine, or the DBA can define the name. |
Database Name | The MS SQL database name. Example: ARSystem. | |
Migration Mode | The migration mode that will be used. Options are:
| |
Oracle | Service Name/SID | Select Service Name or SID, and enter the corresponding value in the field below. |
Schema Name | The Oracle schema name. Example: ARADMIN. | |
PostgresSQL | Instance Name | The name of the database PostgresSQL instance name. The name can be the name of the physical machine, or the DBA can define the name. |
Database Name | The PostgresSQL database name. Example: ARSystem. | |
Sybase | Service Name/SID | Select Service Name or SID, and enter the corresponding value in the field below. |
Schema Name | The Sybase schema name. Example: ARADMIN. | |
HDM User | The name of the database user that BMC Helix Data Manager will use to access the BMC Helix ITSM database server and the underlying BMC Helix ITSM database. The manual database configuration scripts typically use “hdm” as the database user name. Do not use the ARADMIN/ARAdmin user for this connection. You can run the greater part of discovery with the same database user as used by the AR System server, but data migration should not be run with that name. | |
HDM Password | The password for the database user that BMC Helix Data Manager uses to access the BMC Helix ITSM database server and the underlying BMC Helix ITSM database. Use one that meets your local security policy. |
To set the database for remote location
If you selected Remote for the Location field:
- Select Enabled for Data Migration.
- Complete one of the following fields, which appears based on the type of database you selected:
- DB Collation—Manually add the database collation value (for example, SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS). Or allow the field to be automatically completed by selecting Action > Get Character Database Set after you register the system.
- DB Character Set—Enter the respective database character set value.
To set the API options
If you selected the API check box in step 3, and complete the following fields:
This information is required if you want to build AR System workflow by using BMC Helix Data Manager. All other functions are performed directly at the database tier.
Click the Remedy API tab.
Field
Description
Server Address
The IP address or network name of the BMC Helix ITSM server that will be connected to. If this server is an AR System server group, the server must have Administrator rights. When building workflow as part of an upgrade, we strongly recommend that only one BMC Helix ITSM server is active during the build process.
Remedy User Name
The user name of the AR System Administrator user.
Remedy Password
The AR System password for the AR System Administrator user.
Remedy Port
The port on which the BMC Helix ITSM database server is listening for incoming SQL connections. Set as 0 if using a port mapper.
- Click the Save (
) button on the System Info tab.
