Creating a file system

When creating a new logical file system, you must define a unique name and the default connection to that file system. BMC Helix Data Manager uses the connection to read data packages and create the folders and descriptors for data packages during the export process. (To get to the screen below, see Configuring-a-file-system-connection.)

You can register the following data for a file system:

Field

Description

File System Name

The name of the file system as it will be displayed in BMC Helix Data Manager. This is a descriptive name and does not need to match the network address.

Protocol

You can select the following protocols for the default connection to the file system:

  • File—Uses the local operating system on which the BMC Helix Data Manager Engine is installed (Windows or UNIX) to resolve a path to the file system.
  • SMB—Provides access to the files on a CIFS server (such as a Samba server) or a Windows share.

Port

The port that BMC Helix Data Manager Engine will use when connecting to the file system and using the specified protocol. Enter this value only when you are using a non-standard port; otherwise, the BMC Helix Data Manager Engine will use the default port for the selected protocol.

User Name

The user name that BMC Helix Data Manager Engine will use when connecting to the file system.

Password

The password for the user that BMC Helix Data Manager Engine uses to connect to the file system.

Initial Folder

The folder that BMC Helix Data Manager will use when connecting to the file system. See the Installation Guide for details on configuring the file system appropriately for BMC Helix Data Manager.

For each protocol, a different set of connection parameters is required.

File protocol

Attribute

Description

Path

For Windows, you can use a standard path (for example, C:\HDM) or UNC path to connect with file systems on the network (for example, \\SERVERNAME\ShareName). We recommend using the file protocol where possible.

When accessing network file system locations, note the user credentials associated with the Windows service or UNIX daemon running the BMC Helix Data Manager Engine. You can configure a specific Windows or UNIX user to run the BMC Helix Data Manager Engine service.

SMB protocol

You can use SMB connections to connect to remote Windows servers.

Attribute

Description

Host Name

The host name or IP address of the server exposing the share. For example, if the share is \\CalbroVM01\hdm, then put CalbroVM01 in the Host Name field.

Port

In most cases, leave this field blank.

User Name

The Windows domain account/local machine account to connect to the share. This user overrides any user account associated with the BMC Helix Data Manager Engine Windows service or UNIX daemon.

Password

The user's password.

Initial Folder

The name of the share. For example, if the share is \\CalbroVM01\hdm, enter hdm in the Initial Folder field.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
