Testing the IBM Watson Tone Analyzer service


Before consuming the IBM Watson Tone Analyzer service in an application, administrators can test whether the service analyzes a given text correctly. To test the Tone Analyzer service, administrators can use one of the following options:

  • When testing the User Engagement Tone Analysis, if you provide more than 50 utterances (conversations), only the first 50 utterances are analyzed.
  • Utterances or conversations with more than 500 characters are not analyzed.

IBM Watson Assistant will be retiring its Tone Analyzer capability by February 2023, a user sentiment detection within BMC Helix Innovation Studio applications. BMC will no longer activate new BMC Helix Innovation Studio customers with IBM Watson's Tone Analyzer capability effective April 13, 2022.

BMC is reviewing options with IBM for potential replacement capabilities for its intelligent user sentiment detection.

To test the Tone Analyzer service by using a document

  1. Log in to BMC Helix Innovation Studio and navigate to the Administration tab.
  2. Click the configuration UI that you created earlier. 
    For example, select Cognitive Tone Analysis > Tone Analysis Testing.
  3. On the Tone Analysis Testing page, click Document Tone Analysis
  4. From the Language list, select the language of the document. 
    The Tone Analyzer service supports only English and French languages. 
  5. (Optional) If the document contains HTML tags, select the Document Text Contains HTML check box so that the tags are omitted from the analysis.
  6. In Document Text, add the text for which you want to analyze the tone. 
  7. (Optional) If you want to override the tenant-level threshold, in Tone Score Threshold, specify the value. You can enter a value between 0.5 and 1.0
  8. (Optional) If you want to see the tone analysis results for each sentence in the document, select the Include Sentence-level Analysis check box. 
    If you do not select this check box, the tone analysis results for the entire document are displayed. 
  9. Click Analyze Tone

The tone analysis results for the entire document are displayed in the Document Tone section and the results for each sentence in the document are displayed in the Sentence Tones section, as shown in the following image:

To test the Tone Analyzer service by using utterances in a conversation

  1. Log in to BMC Helix Innovation Studio and navigate to the Administration tab.
  2. Click the configuration UI that you created earlier. 
    For example, select Cognitive Tone Analysis > Tone Analysis Testing.
  3. On the Tone Analysis Testing page, click User Engagement Tone Analysis
  4. From the Language list, select the language of the document. 
    The Tone Analyzer service supports only English and French languages. 
  5. In Utterances, add the user conversation for which you want to analyze the tone. 
  6. (Optional) If you want to override the tenant-level threshold, in Tone Score Threshold, specify the value. You can enter a value between 0.5 and 1.0
  7. Click Analyze Tone.

The results of the Tone Analyzer service are displayed in the Utterance Tones field, as shown in the following image:
