Starting and logging on to Developer Studio

As an AR System server administrator or subadministrator, you can log on to an AR System server from any computer on the network that has access to the server. See Assigning-permissions-to-access-objects-and-requests.

Developer Studiostores local preferences and other configuration information in the workspace directory. The default workspace location is C:\Documents and Settings\userName\DeveloperStudio\workspace. To maintain different sets of local preferences and other configuration information, create two or more workspace directories.

To start Developer Studio and log in to AR System servers

1. Select Start > Programs > BMC Software > AR System > Developer Studio.
2. To change the location of your workspace in the Workspace Launcher, click Browse, select or create a directory, and click OK.
3. To clear all local preferences, configured AR System servers, and other local preferences and start Developer Studio in its initial state:
   1. Exit Developer Studio.
   2. Delete the workspace directory.
   3. Restart Developer Studio.

4. In the Workspace Launcher dialog box, click OK to open the login dialog box.
   The layout of the login dialogue box depends on BMC Helix Single Sign-On. 

   When BMC Helix Single Sign-On is enabled for Developer Studio.
   When BMC Helix Single Sign-On is not enabled for Developer Studio

Logging on to a BMC Helix Single Sign-On-enabled server

Perform the following steps when BMC Helix Single Sign-On is enabled for Developer Studio:

1. When you perform the following steps, the User Name and Password fields are unavailable in the login dialog box:
   1. In the login dialog box, click Edit Server List.
   2. Select only one BMC Helix Single Sign-On-enabled server in the Server List dialog box.
   3. Click Next.
2. When you click Login, a new tab in the default browser is opened.
   • If you are already logged in to the browser and are already authenticated as the Demo user, the User Name and Password fields are not displayed in the browser tab. When you click OK, the message The authorization code was obtained. Please close this tab. is displayed in the browser. You are logged in to a BMC Helix Single Sign-On-enabled server.
   • If you are not already logged in, enter your User Name and Password.

Logging on to a non-BMC Helix Single Sign-On enabled server

Perform the following steps to log in to Developer Studio without BMC Helix Single Sign-On authentication:

1. When you perform the following steps, the User Name and Password fields are available in the login dialog box:
   
          a. In the login dialog box, click Edit Server List.
          b. Select only one non-BMC Helix Single Sign-On enabled server in the Server List dialog box.
          c. Click Next.
   The valid User Name and Password that you enter in the login dialog box are accepted to log you in to non-BMC Helix Single Sign-On enabled server.

   You can log in to more than one BMC Helix Single Sign-On-enabled servers and non-BMC Helix Single Sign-On enabled servers at a time.
   Before you add a BMC Helix Single Sign-On-enabled server to the Server List to switch to it, the AR System Administrator must enable BMC Helix Single Sign-On in Developer Studio. Otherwise, when you try to log in to Developer Studio, the authentication fails if the BMC Helix Single Sign-On server is configured for external authentication.

2. In the User Name field, enter the name of a AR System server administrator or subadministrator, such as Demo.
   A AR System user name is case-sensitive, which means you must type Demo, not demo or DEMO.

   During initial installation, the Demo user is created without a password. To keep AR System server secure, add a password for Demo as soon as possible. See Creating-and-modifying-users.

3. Enter the password of the AR System user.
4. (Optional) If you are required to specify an authentication string or a preference server, click Options.
   1. Enter an authentication string. Whether you need an authentication string depends on how your server validates users. For most situations, this field is not used. For more information, see Setting-up-an-authentication-alias.
      You can also define use of an External Authentication (AREA) plug-in. For more information, see AREA-plug-ins.
      You must inform clients whether an authentication string is needed when logging in and what that string should be. For most situations, this field is not used and remains empty.
   2. In the Preference Server field, type the name of your preference server. If the preference server does not use the default TCP port, type the port number in the Preference Server TCP field.
      A preference server is the AR System server on which the AR System preference forms are installed. This server stores your administrator and user preferences in a central location where they can be accessed from any client computer. You define a server as a preference server during or after installation.
      If you always log on from the same computer, leave this field blank to store your preferences locally in the workspace directory.

5. If you have already configured AR System server to connect to, click Login (and skip the rest of this procedure).
6. Click Edit Server List.
   To sort the server list, click the Servers column heading.
   1. In the Server List dialog box, click Add.
   2. Click Enter a server name in the Servers column, and type the server name.
   3. To prevent Developer Studio from connecting to a server, clear the server's check box.
   4. Enter the Server Alias for the server so that you can identify the servers where multiple servers are added.
   5. If the server does not use the default TCP port, click in the TCP column and type the port number.
   6. Repeat sub-steps a through e for each server Developer Studio must connect to.
7. Click OK.
8. In the login dialog box, click Login.

To change the current login

1. Select File > Login.
2. In the login dialog box, change the server list, user name, password, and other information as described in the section above.
3. Click Login.
   You can use the File e> Switch Workspace command to select another workspace and log on using it.
