Monitoring Mid Tier response time

Response time of a page is the time between opening of a page (opening a new URL, clicking a link or refreshing a page) and availability of a page on the browser.

You can monitor the response time of the pages of Mid Tier application by using the Response Time Monitor widget. The Response Time Monitor widget measures AR System workflows that make requests to Mid Tier. To view the overall response time details, you must enable the Response Time Monitor widget from  Mid Tier Configuration Tool.

The Response Time Monitor widget:

  • Cannot monitor loading of IFRAME elements, Data Visualization Fields (DVF) and Flashboards.
  • Cannot monitor loading of cached inline form.

To enable Mid Tier response time monitoring

  1. Open Mid Tier Configuration Tool:
    http://<midTierServer>/shared/config/config.jsp
  2. On the General Settings page, select the Enable Response Time Indicator check box.
By default, the check box is not selected.

For more information about enabling Response Time Indicator, see Configuring the General Settings.

To view overall response time details

  1. Click the Response Time Monitor image2013-4-18 16-46-13.gificon at the bottom right corner of the page.
An Information bar is displayed at the bottom of the page.

  2. To view the Response Time Monitor widget, click the information bar.

  3. Click Refresh perf-monitor-refresh-btn.gif to get the latest values for bandwidth and latency.
The bandwidth and latency values changes based on your network usage at that time.
  4. Click Close perf-monitor-close-btn.gifon the top right corner of the widget to close it.

Response time parameters

The following table describes the parameters used for measuring the overall Mid Tier performance:

Parameters

Description

Users Bandwidth to Server

  • Bandwidth — Indicates the network bandwidth usage in kilobytes per second. It is the bandwidth used to communicate between your browser and Mid Tier.
  • Latency — Indicates the average network time delay while loading a page. It is the time that the network takes to communicate between your browser and the Mid Tier. It is measured in milliseconds.

Note: When you enable the Enable End User Response Time Indicator Mid Tier Configuration Tool, extra calls are sent to the server to measure and report the bandwidth. This may have some performance impact in the deployment.

Base Page

Indicates the form or workflow which is loaded.

Page Load Time

Indicates the total time between opening a page (opening a new URL, clicking a link, opening a new workflow or refreshing a page) and the availability of a page on the browser.

For example, the time between clicking a link and availability of a page in browser is considered as page load time. The page load time can be divided into:

  • Network Time –  Indicates the network latency time in the request. It is measured in milliseconds.
  • Server Time – Indicates the Mid Tier server request processing time. It is measured in milliseconds.
  • Browser Time –  Indicates the time spent by the browser in processing and rendering the request. It is measured in milliseconds.

Last Transaction Time

Indicates the opening of a new page, inline form, or a workflow after a new page or workflow is loaded in the Mid Tier.

The Last 3 Transactions time indicates the page load time for the last three pages, inline forms, or AR System workflow that you visited.
