BlackBerry device requirements

This topic presents the known requirements for BlackBerry devices.

Operating System Requirements

The RIM BlackBerry device operating system requirements are OS 5.x, OS 6.x, OS 7.0 and OS 7.1.

Requirements about using a micro SD card or an eMMC

SQLite databases can be stored on the micro SD card available on any BlackBerry Smartphone, or on BlackBerry Smartphones that have eMMC memory. eMMC memory is similar to a built in micro SD card.  Any current BlackBerry Smartphone with 1 GB or more of  device memory also has eMMC memory.

  • Most BlackBerry Smartphones are able to access a micro SD card, but only a few models have an eMMC.
  • Micro SD cards have much more storage space (up to 16 GB now) than the eMMC.  Therefore, if you have a database with hundreds or thousands of MBs, then a micro SD card is preferred.

However, the requirements for an application may make these recommendations a moot point.  For example an application that is targeted for a BlackBerry Bold 9000 and will have a 2 MB database is best supported by storing its database on the eMMC.

Conclusion

Either use a BlackBerry device with eMMC, or else ensure that a micro SD card is present.
