Preparing the environment for BMC PATROL for Windows Azure (requirements)


This section lists the target computer requirements and the supported operating systems.

Target computer requirements

Verify that the target computer meets the requirements listed in the following table.

Note

Any information about UNIX in the following table applies to versions 5.0 and later of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

PATROL Agent and consoles

PATROL Agent version 3.8.50 or later and one or more of the following consoles:

  • PATROL Console for UNIX
  • PATROL Console for Microsoft Windows
  • PATROL Central Operator – Web Edition
  • PATROL Central Operator – Microsoft Windows Edition

PATROL Agent is required on the computer from where you want to monitor Windows Azure. A PATROL Console for UNIX or PATROL Console for Microsoft Windows in a Developer Console mode is required to configure BMC PATROL for Windows Azure initially.

Other required PATROL products

PATROL installation utility version 7.5.60 or later

Other optional PATROL products

Distribution Server

Distribution Server is required only if you plan to use it to distribute the KM.

  • PATROL Configuration Manager
  • PATROL Knowledge Module (KM) for Event Management

PATROL Configuration Manager and the PATROL KM for Event Management are required if you plan to modify the BMC PATROL for Windows Azure configuration. For more information, see Using PATROL Configuration Manager to configure an Azure account.

Browser

Netscape Navigator for UNIX and Red Hat Linux platforms

Install Netscape Navigator on the computer where the console resides.

Security

BMC PATROL for Windows Azure operates in all PATROL security levels.

ports

The installation utility might require that you specify the port number for agents.

The default port number for agents is 3181.

Disk space needed to install

On Windows and LINUX platforms, 160 MB.

The space mentioned is approximate and assume that you are installing BMC PATROL for Windows Azure only on supported platforms. For a list of supported platforms, see platform.

OS accounts on Windows

If you are installing on Microsoft Windows, a Windows account for BMC PATROL is required.

Use the following guidelines when setting up the Windows account for BMC PATROL:

  • Before installing BMC PATROL, create a dedicated user account that is either a local or a domain account.
  • Accounts that are on a domain controller must be members of the domain Administrators group.
  • Do not use a built-in Administrator account.
  • If you are using a domain account, you must specify the NT domain along with the user name.

OS accounts on UNIX

If you are installing on UNIX, a UNIX account for BMC PATROL is required.

Use the following guidelines when setting up the UNIX for BMC PATROL account:

  • The account .login.profile.cshrc, and.kshrc files should not contain any customizations, such as aliases, non-default prompts, and unmask settings other than 022.
    Do not use the root account.
  • The account must have permission to create directories and write the installation logs to the $HOME and /tmp directories on the computer where you are installing products.
  • The account must have ftp and telnet enabled.
  • The account must have access to a root account on the computer where BMC PATROL is installed.

Supported operating systems

BMC PATROL for Windows Azure supports the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (x86, x86-64)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 (x86, x86-64)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (x86, x86-64)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 2008 R2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 (x86, x86-64)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6 (x86, x86-64)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 (x86, x86-64)

Note

BMC products are certified for use on supported operating system versions. BMC does not explicitly test for OS patches/updates that are released after a BMC product is released.

BMC products should work fine with minor updates to these supported operating systems. For assistance, please contact BMC Customer Support.
