Managing permissions

BMC IT Business Management Suite uses permissions groups to control access to forms, modules, and functions. You define users and permissions for BMC IT Business Management Suite in BMC Remedy Action Request (AR) System. By using a limited number of role-based permissions groups, you can ease the permission model administration. For a list of available permissions, see Permissions.

The assignment of permission combinations is typically based on the roles and responsibilities that your users have within your IT organization. For example, a user that creates service cost models in your organization might need the following permissions:

  • ITBM IT Costing User
  • ITBM IT Costing Delete
  • ITBM CostModel Scenario Viewer

For a list of permissions associated with a user role, see Typical-permissions-combinations.

To ease the process of assigning permissions to users based on roles that they have in your organization, you can use the Permission Management tool. You can use the Permission Management tool for performing the following tasks:

  • Assigning all recommended permissions for a user role
  • Adding permissions for additional roles to existing permissions for a user
  • Replacing a user's existing permissions with new permissions for a role

The roles available in the Permission Management tool are the same as those available from the people templates available in your system. The permissions for each role in the Permission Management tool are the same as the ones that you set in the people templates. By default, all out-of-the-box people templates are available as roles in the Permission Management tool. When you add your own template to BMC Remedy AR System, it is automatically added as a role in the Permission Management tool as long as the prefix of the template name is ITBM. If you change the permissions associated with a template, the changes are reflected in the Permission Management tool as well.

To manage permissions

  1. In BMC Remedy AR System, on the Standard tab of the Application Administration Console, click the Custom Configuration tab.
  2. From the Application Settings list, select IT Business Management > Advanced Options > Permission Management, and then click Open.
  3. In the Company field in the ITBM Permission Management window, specify the name of the tenant company.
  4. To display support staff or non-support staff only, use the Filter By option.
  5. To search a specific user by last name, specify the name in the Last Name Contains field.
  6. To refresh the list displayed, press Enter or click in the table containing the list.
  7. Select the users for which you want to update the permissions.
  8. To specify the role that the selected users have in your organization, select a role from the ITBM Roles list.
  9. Based on your requirements, select from the following options:
    • To specify new permissions or to add additional permissions for a user, select Add Role.
    • To replace existing permissions of a user with new permissions, select Replace With This Role

      Note

The roles that you specify in this window are for identifying and associating the permissions for that role. The role itself is not equivalent to any field or option in BMC IT Business Management Suite.
