Migrating the organizational unit hierarchy

In version 7.6.03 of BMC IT Business Management Suite, you configured organizational units as different company types, such as Customer or Vendor, in BMC Remedy Action Request (AR) System. Starting with BMC IT Business Management 7.6.04, an organizational unit must be configured as a company of the Organizational Unit type. Also, in version 7.6.03, you could relate multiple organizational units to the operating company. In 7.6.04, you can relate only one top-level organizational unit to the operating company. You then configure all other organizational units to relate to either the top-level organization unit or to other organizational units.

For more information about configuring companies and organizational units in BMC Remedy AR System, see Administering.

When you upgrade from BMC IT Business Management Suite 7.6.03 to 7.6.04, you must migrate the organizational units and their hierarchy to the required format for version 7.6.04. You can use the 7.6.03 to 7.6.04 Upgrade Helper to migrate the organizational units. After you perform the migration, the organizational units have a company type of Organizational Unit and the operating company has a single child top-level organizational unit. If you had multiple organizational units related to the operating company in 7.6.03, the Upgrade Helper prompts you to add a new top-level organizational unit under the operating company and moves the organizational unit hierarchy for your company under that top-level organizational unit.

To migrate the organizational unit hierarchy

  1. Use the following URL to display the 7.6.03 to 7.6.04 Upgrade Helper form in the BMC Remedy AR Server interface:
    http://<webServer:port>/arsys/forms/<arsystemServer>/ITBM%3AUpgradeHelper
     where:
    • webServer: Fully qualified name of the BMC Remedy Mid Tier computer, specified in the format serverName.company.com
    • port: (Optional) Port number; required if the web server is not on the default port (port 80)
    • arsystemServer: Name of the BMC Remedy AR System Server that contains BMC IT Business Management Suite
  2. Click the 1. Discover Companies option to display all top-level companies in the system.
  3. For each top-level company discovered, click the 2. Migrate Top Level Company option.
To migrate the data, the software changes the Company Type attribute of all organizational units to the Organizational Unit attribute.
The software also checks for multiple organizational units related to the operating company. When it detects such an instance, the software prompts for a new organizational unit. The new organizational unit is the top-level organizational unit under the top-level company. All organizational units that were related to the operating company are then moved under the new top-level organizational unit.
  4. (Optional) After the migration, you can click History for each operating company to see the companies migrated.
  5. Click the 3. Assign People Data Access option to add the operating company to the access restriction set for all users.
  6. Click the 4. Finalize Changes and Close option.
