Configuring the parameters for a service

Important

The features and enhancements in this topic are under controlled availability to select customers.

When you create a service, you must configure the parameters to define how the service is built and modeled to efficiently manage the underlying applications and infrastructure that is relevant to your business needs.

When defining a service, add the dynamic and static content to specify how the service is updated when there is a change to the IT infrastructure. You can select from the following options:

  • Dynamic content
  • Static content
  • Both, Dynamic and Static content

For example, you can add the Blueprint Host to Storage System blueprint as dynamic content to the Storage service and configuration items (CIs) as the static content to the Network service.

To add dynamic content to a service

  1. Click Services and then click Create New Service.
  2. In the Define Service pane, specify the service name, for example, Storage.
  3. (Optional) Assign a kind to the Storage service.
By default, a service is created as a business service. For more information about service kinds, see Business services, technical services, and business applications.

  4. Click Add Dynamic content.
  5. From the list, select a blueprint.
For information about blueprints, see Understanding service blueprints.

  6. Select one or more values or any other CI attributes that you have defined as variables when defining the blueprint.

    Tip

Select Use regEx and enter a regular expression to search and select multiple configurations simultaneously. For more information about using regular expressions to search, see Logical and arithmetic expressions.

Make sure that you place the global inline flags such as ignorecase (?i) in the beginning of the expression. For example, use (?i)^aus to search and populate the service with the CIs whose names start with aus (case-insensitive). If you place the flag in the middle of the expression, no CIs will be populated for the service.

  7. (Optional) Preview the dynamic content.
  8. Click Save.
The added blueprint appears in the Dynamic Composition section of the Define Service pane.
  9. Click Save and Close.

To add static content to a service

  1. Click Services and then click Create New Service.
  2. In the Define Service pane, specify the service name, for example, Network.
  3. (Optional) Assign a kind to the Network service.
By default, a service is created as a business service. For more information about service kinds, see Business services, technical services, and business applications.

  4. (Optional) Select service criticality from the list to mark the importance of the business service.
By default, no default criticality is assigned to a service.
  5. Click Add Static content.
  6. Click Add CIs to Service to add CIs from the list.
  7. Select one or more CIs to add the CIs to the service.
When you select only one CI, the Include Related CIs check box is enabled and you can select it to add the related CIs of the selected CI. If you don't want to add related CIs, clear the check box.
If you select multiple CIs, the Include Related CIs check box is disabled.
  8. Click Close to view the static CIs added as part of static content.
  9. (Optional) Change the display to Organic or Hierarchic view.
In the organic view, nodes are placed close to their adjacent nodes, thus saving space.
In the hierarchic view, the nodes are distributed into layers, which facilitates the identification of dependencies and relationships among the nodes.
  10. Click Save and Close.
The Define Service pane shows the static CIs added in the Static Composition section.
  11. (Optional) In the Define Service pane, click View Content at the bottom of the pane and view all content or only direct connections.
  12. Click Save and Close.
