Creating a linked universe
Linked universes share common components such as parameters, classes, objects, or joins. In a linked universe relationship, one universe is the core and the other is the derived universe. Components from the core universe are inherited by the derived universe. The components from a derived universe appear as dimmed within the Universe and Structure panes. You cannot modify or delete them; however, you can create joins between the tables.
This section contains the procedure for creating a new (derived) universe and linking it to the default ITSM universe.
If you are planning to customize the universe, BMC recommends that you create a linked universe, then apply your customizations to the new linked universe. That way, when product enhancements are available, you can upgrade the product without overwriting your customizations.
Be aware that when you import a linked universe into the Universe Design Tool it can take 10 to 20 minutes to perform the import. This occurs because the linked universe first loads all the objects and classes for its master universe (ITSM universe) and then loads its own objects and classes.
Before you begin
You must have imported the default ITSM universe and configured the database connection. For more information, see Configuring-universe-parameters.
To create a derived universe and link it to the default ITSM universe
- Log on to the SAP BusinessObjects Designer tool.
- Select File > New.
- In the Universe Parameter dialog box, enter a new universe name in the Name field — ITSM_7.6.06, for example.
- From the Connection list, select ITSM.
- Click Test and verify that the database server responds.
- Click OK.
- Save and export the new universe.
- Import the new universe.
- Select Edit > Links.
- In the Links tab of the Universe Parameters dialog box, click Add Link.
- In the Universe to Link dialog box, select the default ITSM universe and click Open.
This step adds a link to the default universe and adds the default universe structure into the new universe as shown in the following figure. The following figure shows the structure of the ITSM universe added into the structure of the new universe that is to be used for storing customizations. The ITSM universe structure is gray and cannot be modified from within the linked universe, because it is just a logical representation. - Save and export the linked universe.
