Creating subtasks
This topic guides you on how to create new Subtasks within Tasks related to a sprint, phase or the backlog of the project. For a quick introduction and the life cycle of the task, you can refer to Project Management Overview.
These operations can be performed by Task Users members of the Teams of the project, Project Manager of the project, Portfolio/Program Manager of the parent portfolio/program, Project Masters, Portfolio Masters and Project Managers with write additional access to the project.
To create a new subtask
- Log in to the Portfolio Management application
- Open the task where you want to create the subtask, in different ways:
- Navigate to Workspaces > Projects and open a project on the Projects workspace by clicking the required project ID.
- If the parent task is related to a sprint or phase, go to the Sprints or Phases tab and click the required sprint ID or phase ID. On the sprint or phase page, go to the Tasks tab and click the required task ID.
- Otherwise, go to the Tasks in the Backlog tab or Global Tasks tab, and click the required task ID.
- Navigate to Workspaces > Project Tasks and open the parent task on the Project Tasks workspace by clicking the required task ID.
- Navigate to Workspaces > Projects and open a project on the Projects workspace by clicking the required project ID.
- On the task details page, go to the Subtasks tab and click New Subtask.
On the create task blade page, enter the values for the following fields:
Field Labels
Description
Summary
Enter a short Summary of the subtask which describes the objective.
Priority
Critical, High, Medium, Low.
Estimated Effort (h)
A rough estimation is required for its completion.
Actual Effort (h)
How much time does it take to complete the subtask?
Required Skill
Select the skill required to complete the subtask, application Admin can configure skill values: Configuring-Skill-Area.
Start Date
Estimated start date of the subtask. The start date has to be after the start date of the parent task. By default, the field contains the start date of the parent task.
End Date
Estimated end date of the subtask. The end date has to be before the end date of the parent task. By default, the field contains the end date of the parent task.
Assigned Team
Team assignee who works on this subtask.
Description
This is a special type of field that supports basic formatting, images, tables, and hyperlink. Enter details of the subtask.
Attachments
Add attachments that can have details on subtasks.
- Click Save.
The new subtask is created in:
- Backlog status if parent task is in 'Backlog' status.
- Selected for Sprint status if parent task is in Selected for Sprint status.
- Selected for Phase status if parent task is in Selected for Phase status.
- To Do status if parent task is in To Do, In progress, or Pending status.
You can see the new subtask in the list Subtasks tab.
To create a new subtask using a template
- Log in to the Portfolio Management application
- Open the task where you want to create the subtask, in different ways:
- Navigate to Workspaces > Projects and open a project on the Projects workspace by clicking the required project ID.
- If the parent task is related to a sprint or phase, go to the Sprints or Phases tab and click the required sprint ID or phase ID. On the sprint or phase page, go to the Tasks tab and click the required task ID.
- Otherwise, go to the Tasks in the Backlog tab or Global Tasks tab, and click the required task ID.
- Navigate to Workspaces > Project Tasks and open the parent task on the Project Tasks workspace clicking the required task ID.
- Navigate to Workspaces > Projects and open a project on the Projects workspace by clicking the required project ID.
- On the task details page, go to the Subtasks tab and click New Subtask.
- On the create task blade page, click Select Template.
- On the Select Task Template page, there is a list of the available task templates where the 'Has subtask' field is 'No', select a task template from the list and click Select.
Enter and review the values (some of them are copied from the template) for the following fields:

Name of the task template applied, you cannot modify this field.
Summary
Summary copied from a template.
Priority
Priority copied from a template.
Estimated Effort (h)
Estimated effort copied from a template.
Actual Effort (h)
How much time does it take to complete the task?
Required Skill
Skill copied from a template.
Start Date
Estimated start date of the task. The start date has to be after the start date of the parent task. By default, the field contains the start date of the parent task.
End Date
Once the start date is filled, the end date is populated automatically in order to the Duration from the template and start date.
Team Assigned
Team assignee who works on this subtask.
Description
Description copied from a template.
Attachments
Add attachments that can have details on subtasks.
- Click Save.
The new subtask is created in:

- Selected for Sprint status if parent task is in Selected for Sprint status.
