Backing up BMC HelixGPT custom configurations

When you upgrade to a newer version of BMC HelixGPT, out-of-the-box (OOTB) components such as skills, agents, and tools might be overwritten, which can result in the loss of customizations. This risk of losing customizations applies to SaaS as well as On premises deployments.

To prevent this loss of customizations, review and back up any modified components before starting the upgrade. With appropriate backup, you can maintain system functionality and minimize post-upgrade effort.

For on-premises deployments of BMC HelixGPT, it is especially important to back up all custom configurations. For more information, see Upgrading BMC Helix Service Management to 25.2.01.

To back up OOTB components

All OOTB skills, agents, tools, and toolkits provided with the BMC HelixGPT are read-only and cannot be modified directly. To apply customizations, you must create editable copies.

During the upgrade process, any OOTB components, such as skills, agents, tools, and toolkits that have the same IDs as the existing ones, are automatically overwritten. If you have modified any of these components, your changes will be lost unless you back them up beforehand.

To protect customization, you must clone the components manually through the user interface. For more information about using the user interface, see the following topics:

To register the backed-up components

After you have backed up components for your application, you need to register them in the BMC HelixGPT Agent Studio GPT configuration by performing the following steps:

Configuring settings to use Agentic AI capabilities

  1. In BMC Helix ITSM, click Settings.
  2. Select HelixGPT Configuration > GPT configurations > GPT configurations.
  3. Locate the required Intent type and Use case for which you want to register the custom skill, as the OOTB skills may be used in multiple use cases.
  4. Click the corresponding record.
  5. In the Edit HelixGPT Configuration screen, copy the skill ID of the custom skill that you created while backing up components. Input the copied ID into the Skill field, modify the required details, and click Save.
This process automatically lists the custom skill in the GPT configurations.
