Specifying general settings

The general settings help you control the behavior of generic system functions. You can navigate to the System > Settings > General page to specify default values for certain functions, enable or disable functions, and define the authentication mechanism for your system.

The following table describes the settings that you can modify.

General system settings

Setting

Description

Instance Information

Instance Name

Specify a unique name to identify the BMC Release Process Management product instance. The instance name is displayed at the lower-right corner. Specifying an instance name is useful if you have multiple instances of BMC Release Process Management installed in your environment.

For example, BRPM instance.

Instance Base URL

Specify the fully qualified server URL where BMC Release Process Management is running.

For example, http://vw-pun-rpm-1234.bmc.com:8080

Specifying this information is useful in the following cases:

  • Operating in cluster mode: If you have multiple instances of BMC Release Process Management running on different server nodes along with a load balancer, specify the load-balanced URL.
  • Using the Network Address Translation (NAT) functionality: If your BMC Release Process Management server is protected behind a firewall with the NAT functionality that restricts direct access of the application, specify the server URL with the external port that in turn tunnels the traffic to the internal port.
  • Server migration or change in DNS name: If you have migrated or changed the DNS name of the server on which BMC Release Process Management was originally running, specify the new server's URL.

Session Timeout

Specify the timeout for the user session in BMC Release Process Management.

Date and Time Settings

Default Date Format

You can select from the following date options to apply as a default setting:

  • MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM: Month/Day/Year Hours:Minutes
  • DD/MM/YY HH:MM: Day/Month/Year Hours:Minutes
  • YY/MM/DD HH:MM: Year/Month/Day Hours:Minutes
  • MON-DD-YYYY: Month-Day-Year

Module - Requests

One-Click Step Completion

Select this check box to complete a manual step by one click and without having to manually start it. When the corresponding request is started, you can see the Complete Step Complete.jpgbutton without having to click the Start Step Start.jpgbutton for a manual step. This helps you maintain a checklist of items that must be done in the form of manual steps under a request. When you complete the task, you can directly complete the step without having to start it.

Note: This capability is applicable only for manual steps.

Commit on completion

Select this check box to enable the Commit on completion check box by default in the New Step dialog box when you are adding a new step.

Limit Versions to Metadata

In the New Step dialog box, select this check box to cause a list box to appear for selection of the component version and for an installed component associated to an environment of an application on the Applications tab. If you do not select this check box, a text box is displayed for you to enter an appropriate component version. Selecting this check box provides a list of versions available in the database. To see a list of versions, you must have already created these versions for the appropriate application, environment, and component set by using the Environment > Metadata > Manage Version Tags page.

Email Release Stage Completion

At least one request is successfully deployed to the stage and the next stage or stages, if any, become available for deployment. An email notification is sent to the users of the application.

Notes:

  • A root user must be added to the appropriate team to receive this email notification.
  • For more information about the notification templates, see Managing-notification-templates.

Module - Steps

Default Step Estimate
(in minutes)

Specify the default value in minutes that is used to populate the Estimate box when scheduling steps (expand General tab).

Allow Alternate Servers

Select this check box if you want to use additional servers that are not assigned to the component of application environment that is used in a step.

Module - Automation

Enable Automation

Enable this check box so that you can see the Automation tab on the Environment menu and successfully use the product's automation capability.
