Metadata

Metadata (meta content) is data that provides information about one or more aspects of data. These aspects include:

  • Means of creation of the data
  • Purpose of the data
  • Time and date of creation
  • Creator or author of data
  • Location on a computer network where the data was created
  • Standards used

If you click Environment > Metadata in BMC Release Process Management, a list of metadata used in the application appears. The BMC Release Process Management administrator can fully use this section of the application, and the deployer, the coordinator, and the user have limited permissions depending on the role assigned to them.

You can perform the following functions by using the Metadata tab:

  • Manage Categories
  • Manage Lifecycle Templates
  • Manage Lists
  • Manage Package Contents
  • Manage Phases
  • Manage Procedures
  • Manage Processes
  • Manage Releases
  • Manage Request Templates
  • Manage Work Tasks
  • Manage Tickets
  • Manage Versions Tags

Metadata enables you to manage settings for miscellaneous objects that are used within the application. For example, you can manage procedures, templates for requests, business processes, and releases while you design a request. You can manage tasks, phases, and categories that you use to operate on steps and categorize them. Lists enable you to manage enumerations.

Instructions for adding metadata to advanced tasks are provided with those tasks. See Setting-up-miscellaneous-metadata to learn about basic uses of metadata.
