Before you upgrade, perform the following tasks:

  • Download the required files from the following links:The following table provides links to the page in the EPD website that contains the installation files for this product. From the EPD page you can select and download the installation files for your platform. Access to the EPD website requires that you provide your BMC Support credentials. You might also be prompted to complete the Export Compliance Form.

  • Ensure that your computer meets the system requirements.
  • Ensure that you have set up the installation environment.
  • Verify that you are upgrading using the supported upgrade paths

    Note

    If you are upgrading with the built-in PostgreSQL database and the database name contains special characters, rename the database, otherwise, the upgrade fails.

  • (Required only when you upgrade to 5.0.03.002 or later) During upgrade to 5.0.03.002 or later, the production.rb file gets replaced by a new instance of the file. If you have made changes to the production.rb file, ensure that you back up the file, and update the file again after upgrade. This file is located at RLMhome\releases\productVersion\RPM\portal.war\WEB-INF\config\environments.
  • Save a backup of your database. In case of any issues with the product upgrade, revert your database to the backup and perform the upgrade again.
  • If you have custom views of the teams_roles and teams_users tables in the database, back up and delete your custom views before upgrading to 5.0.x. The installer drops these tables during installation. However, if the tables are in use, the installer cannot drop the tables and the installation fails. After successfully upgrading to 5.0.x, you can restore your views.
    Windows:

    • BMC recommends that you install the product with administrator privileges. You can install the product as a normal user without administrator privileges, but you cannot register the product as a service.
    • When upgrading to BRPM 5.0.x with an existing database and more than 1,000 existing requests, BMC recommends that before you install the application you increase the amount of memory that the installer can use to avoid possible issues. To do this, change the value of the  _JAVA_MAXIMUM_HEAP_SIZE property in the appropriate file.

      Example

      Open the  setup.bin file and change:
      set _JAVA_MAXIMUM_HEAP_SIZE=-Xmx512m
      to:
      set _JAVA_MAXIMUM_HEAP_SIZE=-Xmx1024m

    Linux:

    • BMC recommends that you install the product with superuser privileges. You can install the product as a normal user without superuser privileges, but you cannot register the product as a service.
    • When upgrading to BRPM 5.0.x with an existing database and more than 1,000 existing requests, we recommend that before you install the application you increase the amount of memory that the installer can use to avoid possible issues. To do this, change the value of the _JAVA_MAXIMUM_HEAP_SIZE property in the appropriate file.

      Example

      Open the setup.sh file and change:

      _JAVA_MAXIMUM_HEAP_SIZE=-Xmx512m
      to:
       _JAVA_MAXIMUM_HEAP_SIZE=-Xmx1024m

    • Ensure that there is no Ruby Version Manager (RVM) environment in the installation path.
