Fresh installation

This topic provides instructions for installing BMC Release Package and Deployment version 4.4 on Microsoft Windows and Linux.

Before you begin

  • Ensure that you have Administrator privileges (on Windows) or superuser privileges (on Linux) to install this solution in the Program Files directory (on Windows) and register the component products as services.

    Note

You can install this solution as a normal user without Administrator privileges (on Windows) or superuser privileges (on Linux), but without these privileges you cannot register the component products as services or install the solution in the Program Files directory (on Windows).

Refer to the <RLM_HOME>/README_special_config.txt file for more information on how to register and start/stop services for the non-root installation.

  • Verify that your environment meets the requirements listed in the System-requirements topic and verify that you have prepared the installation environment.
  • If you are installing the BMC Release Package and Deployment solution on any Linux platform, ensure that there is no rvm environment in the path of the installation.
  • Download and unzip the BMC Release Package and Deployment zip files in your preferred location.
  • If your Linux environment has the DISPLAY variable set to export your display to a remote system, ensure that the remote system has an X Window server installed and configured.
  • If you are installing the suite as a part of an upgrade, make a backup of your database to protect it from any issues that may occur during the upgrade.

To install the solution

  1. Start the installation program:
  • Windows:
    • If you are installing the product with administrator privileges:
      1. Enter the setup.cmd (BRLM\Disk1) command.
      2. From the menu, right-click setup.cmd, and click Run as administrator.
    • If you are installing the product as a normal user, double-click setup.cmd.
  • Linux:

    1. Log on as root and navigate to BRLM/Disk1.
    2. Enter the chmod -R +x . command.
    3. Enter the ./setup.sh command.
  1. On the first page of the BMC Release Lifecycle Management 4.4.00 Installer wizard, click Next.
  2. On the license agreement page, select I agree to the terms of the license agreement, and then click Next.
The Directory Selection page is displayed as shown in the following image:
  3. To perform a fresh installation, provide the directory path for installing this suite by clicking Browse, and then click Next.

    Note

The directory that you select for the product installation must be empty for the installation to complete successfully.

  4. On the Installation Type page, select the appropriate option for installing as either a root user or a normal user, and then click Next.
    • Installer is started with root privileges so perform full installation: Installs the solution as an administrator or root user
    • Install solution files and configurations. Do not perform tasks that require special rights: Installs the solution as a normal user

      Note

      • If you are a normal user without administrator or root privileges and if you still select the first option, then your installation might not complete successfully. For a successful product installation, specify the installation directory to which you have access (for example your user home directory).
      • If you select the second option, you can install the suite as a normal user without administrator or root privileges, but you cannot register the component products—deployment engine, dispatcher, RPD API, Apache server, Torquebox server, and the PostgreSQL database server—as services. However, you can register those components later. To do this, see the instructions in the <RLM_HOME>/README_special_configuration file (where RLM_HOME is your installation directory).
