Installing FootPrints
This topic explains the installation process for new installations of versions 12.1.00 and later. You can install FootPrints on Linux or Windows systems. For more information about using Silent mode for Linux installs, see Installing FootPrints using Silent Mode.
To perform the installation
- Review Prerequisites for important pre-installation steps, including how to install Java and Tomcat.
- Log on to the system where you want to install FootPrints as an Administrator.
- Download the installer file.
For more information, see Downloading-the-installation-files. - Extract the installer file contents into a temporary location.
- Double-click the setup file. For Windows, this file is named setup.exe. For Linux, this file is named setup.bin. If a security access message appears, click Yes.
The installer Welcome screen appears. - If you want to install in a language other than English, click the down arrow and select a language.
Click OK.
The Installer wizard verifies that your server meets the requirements and then the License Agreement pane appears.- Select I agree and click Next.
The Installation Documentation pane appears, offering a link to the Installation Guide. - Click Next.
The Installer wizard processes your selections so far and then the Installation Folder pane appears. - Accept the default location or click Browse to select an installation folder.
The selected folder must be empty. - Click Next.
The Administrator Setup pane appears. - Enter the authentication information:
Type values in the Login name, Password & Re-type password fields.
- Enter information in the Full name and Email address fields.
The administration email address you provide cannot include the plus (+) or dash (-) characters.
- Click Next.
The Encryption Key Setup pane appears. - Enter the encryption key phrase that you want to use. If this phrase is not already recorded offline, save this phrase now at an appropriate location.
Encryption key phrases must be between 8 and 80 characters long. Any characters or symbols may be used. - Click Next.
The Encryption Warning pane may appear. - Click Next.
The Identify and Configure Tomcat Web Server pane appears. - Select the location of an installed Tomcat Web Server:
- Click Browse to select the installed server.
- If the Tomcat configuration files are not in the same location as the server, select Tomcat configuration files are installed in a different folder.
The Folder of installed Tomcat configuration files field appears. - Click Browse to select the location and click Next.
The select engine and host pane appears, showing the discovered information.
- (Optional) Select Tomcat Web Server information:
- In the Engine field, select the Tomcat Web Server Engine that you want to use.
- In the Host field, select the Tomcat Web Server Host that you want to use.
- Click Next.
The Database Setup and Configuration pane appears. - Complete the fields to create the database and enter your access credentials:
if you are not directly on the machine and are connecting through Terminal Services, modify, select the type of database, and click Next.
The installer verifies that your selections are valid, and the authentication pane appears.- Enter your user credentials and other connection information for the server and click Next.
- SQL Server: you will be asked for the Server Instance name to connect to, a SQL user name and password to use that has the permission to create database, create user, and create table, and the port to use to connect. You can also choose to use windows credentials instead of a SQL user that must have the same permissions. The user credentials will only be used during the install and not saved for future use.
- PostgreSQL: you will be asked for the Host name, a SQL user and password with permission to create database, create user, and create table, a port, and a system database name. The user credentials will only be used during the install and not saved for future use. The system verifies access to the database, and the Database objects permissions pane appears.
- Select Allow installer to create database or Use existing database.
- If you selected Use existing database, select the database from the list.
- Click Next.
The system verifies that the selected database is available. If you selected SQL Express, the password entry pane appears. Otherwise, the FootPrints Database Users pane appears; proceed to step 22. - For SQL Express:
- Enter the password for the "sa" account defined in SQL Server Express.
- Click Next.
The FootPrints Database Users pane appears.
The installer creates three database users that are used by the system while making calls to the database as the application is being used. If you do not like the suggested passwords, you can enter your own passwords. Ensure to store these passwords elsewhere in an encrypted file.
- Click Next.
The report user pane appears. The installer creates a database user for optional use if you decide to connect to the database with a third party tool in the future. Enter a password for this user.
- Click Next.
The Application URL pane appears. Enter the path that someone will use to get to the application from their web browser in the FootPrints Server URL and Port field.
For the FootPrints Application Path field, enter the string that appear must appear after the previous when accessing the application from their web browser. If this is not known, retain the default value.
- Click Next.
The Ready to Install summary pane appears. You can copy this summary to store elsewhere. - Review the contents of the summary and then click Install.
The installer checks that there is sufficient disk space. If so, the progress pane appears. Errors display in this pane when they occur. When installation is complete, a success message appears. - To view the installation log, click View Log.
The log details appear in a new window. You can click an error to view additional details. If a Tomcat server was installed, it will be started. - Click Finish.
The installer closes all windows that it opened. - Install a 30-day trial license:
- Log on to FootPrints.
The Manage License page appears, showing a message to download a 30-day trial license. - Click the message.
The demo license download page opens in a new browser window. - Download the license file.
- Return to the Manage License page and click Load License.
The File Upload dialog box appears. - Navigate to the license file and open it.
The license is uploaded. If no workflow process is defined in your environment, the Create a new Business Process page appears. - Select a Business Process template to help you get started with working in FootPrints. Selecting a Business Process Templates configures a lot of out-of-the-box common functionality. Unless you are an expert, you should choose a template

- Log on to FootPrints.
- Start the Tomcat server.
Installation is completed.
