Enhancements in version 8.2.00

This topic briefly describes the new features in version 8.2 of the BMC Database Automation product.

Support for MySQL

BMC Database Automation now supports MySQL versions 5.1.xx and 5.5.xx on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6. The Guide to BMC Database Automation MySQL Support contains information on configuring your BMC Database Automation environment to discover MySQL instances, as well as the MySQL related activities that can be performed using BMC Database Automation.

Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 for Managers

BMC Database Automation now supports the use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 as an OS for servers running the Manager software. See OS-requirements.

Support for DB2

BMC Database Automation now supports the discovery, patching, and running custom scripts against servers running DB2 version 9.7 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and IBM AIX version 6.1. See Databases-supported.

Enhanced reporting using BMC Decision Support – Database Automation

Enhanced BMC Database Automation reports are available using the BMC Decision Support – Database Automation product. These reports contain detailed information about job activity, patching initiatives, and system inventory. See Configuring-to-support-reports.

Support for mixed major versions of Oracle clusters and databases

BMC Database Automation now supports provisioning of databases running other versions of Oracle on Oracle 11g clusters for various versions of Clusters Ready Services (CRS). The following table identifies the mixed major versions of Oracle that are supported, by CRS version.

Support for Oracle 11g minor version upgrade (RAC and Restart)

BMC Database Automation now supports minor version upgrades for Oracle 11g Grid Infrastructure and Real Application Clusters (RAC) environments. See Upgrading-a-database.

Integration with BMC Remedy IT Service Management for operator-initiated changes

Introduces the ability to use the Change Management approval workflow in BMC Remedy IT Service Management (ITSM) for BMC Database Automation operator-initiated change (OIC) jobs. The interface between BMC Database Automation and BMC Remedy ITSM is provided by BMC Atrium Orchestrator. The change control functions can be enabled or disabled on provisioning, patching, and Action jobs. When change control is enabled for a job, existing or new BMC Remedy ITSM tickets can be used to track the change process. The associated job can be approved or declined from either BMC Database Automation or BMC Remedy ITSM. See Configuring-change-control.

Enhancements to Actions

The following enhancements have been made to BMC Database Automation Actions:

  • Actions now support the creating and running of verification checks as part of an Action job. These verification checks are run before the Action is executed as part of the Action job. See Creating-custom-verification-check-files.
  • Action manifest properties, such as OS restrictions, are now managed via the user interfaces, when creating or editing an Action. See Creating-an-Action.
  • Actions can now be configured so that they can be initiated directly from the menu of an object page, such as a node, cluster, or database. See Creating-an-Action.
  • A new option, Actions Categories, is available in the Context Frame. Actions Categories enables you to create classes of Actions to which one or more Actions can be assigned. These categories appear as top-level menu headers on object pages. The object pages on which an Action Category appears is determined by the scopes defined for the Action Category. See Adding-an-Action-category.

Enhancements to the user interface

In the Contents tab, activities in earlier releases that were initiated by clicking a button have been converted to drop-down menus in this release, and grouped under the following categories: Provision, Management, and Maintenance. See Viewing-the-Grid-Contents-tab.

Enhancements to templates

The template function in BMC Database Automation has been enhanced to provide the ability to span custom field provisioning across multiple pages. Adding <page> and <title> tags in the custom fields definitions in your templates can be used to group custom fields across multiple pages. See Adding-custom-fields-to-a-template.
